Inspector of Mines Great Slave Lake, Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories, Canada
#SR 08/19
We are looking for an Inspector of Mines who administers the NWT and Nunavut Mine Health and Safety Act and Regulations and the Explosives Use Act and Regulations. You will review submissions and applications from mines for safety concerns prior to recommending approval by the Chief Inspector of Mines. You will carry out inspections and safety audits of mining operations to ensure compliance with the Mine Safety Act and Regulations and conformance to industry standards. To be considered for this position, you must meet the legislative requirements under section 19.02 of the Mine Safety Regulations.
You must be a graduated Mining Engineer or Technologist from an accredited university, college or technical college, combined with at least seven years practical mining experience, of which at least five years has been spent in production operations, and at least one year supervisory experience at a mine. Other requirements include thorough knowledge in interpreting and applying Acts/Regulations and up-to-date knowledge of mining practices and technology. Superior written and verbal communication skills and excellent people skills are essential. Salary ranges from $38.41 to $43.57 per hour (approximately $74,899 to $84,961 per annum), plus a northern allowance of $2,500 per annum. The candidates for both positions must possess a valid Class
5 Driver’s Licence, are subject to a satisfactory criminal records check and will be required to travel frequently within the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Both positions are nontraditional occupations. Candidates must include a detailed outline of skills and responsibilities for each of their previous and present positions relevant to this job competition. Equivalencies will be considered on a case by case basis.
Located on the shores of beautiful Great Slave Lake, Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories, is known for the majestic Aurora Borealis in the winter, the stunning Midnight Sun in the summer and countless outdoor recreation activities. With a population of 18,700, Yellowknife is a modern, bustling city rich in diversity, arts and culture, with a “small town” feel, and is a great place to live and work. The Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut strives to be recognized as a caring, efficient and service focused organization, and a model and trusted partner in workplace safety. If safety, concern for people, collaboration, engagement, integrity, transparency and openness are important to you, and you are interested in joining a dynamic team of innovative and enthusiastic Northerners, we have an exciting opportunity for you. We are recruiting for two positions that are located in Yellowknife and report to the Chief Inspector of Mines.
The Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission provides a generous benefits package.
