Summary Description of Duties:
Senior Mine Engineer
Purpose of Role
To oversee activities related to the mine engineering team and to ensure service and / or operating standards are met (internally and / or externally). To design and develop processes, practices and methodologies for the mine engineering department. To lead the execution of the strategy for mine engineering team. To ensure continued growth of the team and to maximize operational efficiencies, safety, and profitability.
Key Areas of Responsibility & Duties
1. To oversee activities related to the mine engineering team
Independently prepares mine designs and Life of Mine Plans
Using advanced professional knowledge, acts as an advisor to a variety of internal and / or external requests such as to identify and analyze business requirements and the implications for the team; identifies gaps and implements agreed upon solutions; makes recommendations for opportunities that maximize efficiency and productivity of the entire operation
Proposes new work approaches, methods and policies to optimize performance and to ensure adherence to industry regulations and organizational standards
Contributes to the development of policies and practices related to mine engineering that contribute to effective mine engineering
Keeps on top of trends related to mine engineering and incorporates this information into work assignment and approach
Monitors costs related to projects, mine plans and equipment replacement analyses and implements approved recommendations for maximizing operational efficiencies
Assigns tasks to less experienced employees and provides mentorship and guidance on complex or escalated issues
Actively seeks mentorship and learning to improve product or technical knowledge and skill set
Participates in task forces related to area of expertise
2. To analyze information and prepare technical documents to support decision making
Investigates, researches and analyzes information and issues related to mine engineering
Prepares business cases regarding projects and initiatives and presents recommendations and status updates to key stakeholders
Prepares technical reports and documentation to ensure compliance with industry and operational requirements
Develops accurate mineral model(s) for use in planning and reserve / resource calculations
Prepares resource / reserve estimations and annual technical report
3. To communicate information related to mine engineering
Assists with training and skill development on technical issues in mine engineering
Provides information on operating standards, compliance requirements and policies
Manages design, bidding, and contracting of multi-million dollar construction projects
Provides support, as needed, to other departments on monthly reporting
4. To lead and manage a team responsible for executing mine engineering strategy
Identifies strategies and key performance goals and acts as an advisor to direct reports; works to overcome challenges and barriers, and minimize risk
Sets performance targets and measures, monitors, and manages the overall performance of the team and direct reports
Builds the capabilities of the team to enhance their ability to achieve financial and operating strategy; hires appropriately, leverages the talents of the team, and takes corrective action where necessary
Identifies key performance measures for the team; monitors and reports on the achievement of targets, and revises strategies as needed
Qualifications:
KEY COMPETENCIES REQUIRED FOR SUCCESS
BSc in Mining Engineering or Geological Engineering or equivalent work experience
Additional specialized education of up to 4 years
Registration as a professional mining engineer is preferred
5 to 8 years of related work experience
Must be skilled in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office programs
Should be skilled in economic evaluation and sensitivity analysis of projects and plans, including cash flow analysis and rate of return calculations
Knowledge of engineering techniques as they apply to mine design, mine planning, equipment analysis, and project management
Proficiency with VULCAN Mine Planning software
Block Modelling experience - 5 years min
Experience at underground operations - 5 years min
Recent experience in Reserve Estimation and Reporting
