Position Summary
The Chief Metallurgist is accountable to the Mill Manager for managing and optimizing the metallurgical performance of the operations Ag/Zn/Pb processing facilities. The incumbent will provide leadership, development, and direction to his subordinate staff to ensure that the business objectives of the Company are consistently achieved through the quality controlled operation of all metallurgical functions to ensure accurate, timely and optimal service support to the mill operations group.
Duties and Responsibilities
Management / Leadership
• Recruit, develop and retain a National metallurgical and process control team, consistent with the authorized manning budget, which is capable of delivering accurate, timely, quality controlled and cost effective services to its customers
• Select, train and develop suitable National candidates to potentially localize the position within 3-5 years
• Lead and mentor the key departmental subordinates to ensure that the their deliverables consistently reach or exceed target in their areas of accountability
Health, Safety & Environmental
• Develop and implement work procedures, systems and standards that will comply with occupational health and workplace safety standards to meet Company and national guidelines, policies and legislation
• Actively promote the recognition in subordinate staff that the health and safety of their personnel is of the highest priority and cannot be compromised
Technical
• Closely liaise with the mill operations group to ensure that the metallurgical performance of the plant meets the business requirements in terms of timing and accuracy
• Implement quality control procedures to ensure accuracy and re-produceability of all results
• Monitor international practices and technology to advise management upon trends and alternative procedures to adopt in order to optimize plant performance and effectiveness
Financial
• Develop operating and capital budget plans consistent with the goals of the business and the direction of the Mill Manager
• Review, report, action and reforecast departmental financial performance on a regular basis which shall be no less than monthly.
• Propose and implement authorized operating and capital expenditure strategies that will enhance the financial performance of the laboratory and associated operations

Accountabilities
The position is accountable for:
• Safety, health and well being of all subordinate personnel
• Managing the shift metallurgists and process control engineers to ensure quality controlled, timely and accurate presentation of plant results to all internal customers
• Developing a metallurgical team dedicated to the provision of quality service to all of its clients
• Tight cost control within approved guidelines
• Leading a metallurgical/process team to recommend and implement enhanced departmental performance through cost reduction or quality enhancement
Qualifications
• Tertiary qualification in Metallurgy or Mineral Processing or a related field.
• Minimum of 10 years experience in plant metallurgical operations with at least 5 years at a management level.
• Prior experience in Latin America
• Proven leadership skills and abilities to develop local staff
• Ability to communicate in Spanish
• Hands on management style encouraging participative input but with clearly focused business goals

• Ability to function at high altitudes (~ 4,000 meters) for extended periods
