BHP Billiton Iron Ore is an industry leader in the supply of core raw materials to the global steel industry. Our Business Development team plays a critical role in our business success, through its development of a long term global project pipeline to ensure future business growth.
In Guinea, BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s emerging interests are curreettntly driven through our participation in the Société des Mines de Fer de Guinée (SMFG) joint venture project, aimed at developing Mount Nimba and associated projects.
Position Synopsis
We seek an experienced, dynamic leader to manage the resource evaluation for our Nimba Project in Guinea. Reporting to the Nimba Operations Manager, key activities of this role will include:
* All resource evaluation-related HSEC management;
* Planning, implementing and interpreting drilling programmes, including target testing, detailed resource and reserve drilling and drilling to test physical properties of the ore;
* Managing and supervising site geological programmes, including geophysical surveys, mapping programmes and geochemical analytical programmes;
* Leading the interpretation and modelling of geological data, including three dimensional geological models of the ore body;
* Scheduling geological programmes to ensure that short and long term business goals are met;
* Providing leadership, supervision, technical support and mentoring, including training and development, to a team of local geoscientists;
* Managing budgets (setting, forecasting, reconciliation);
* Managing and monitoring the efficiency and performance of contracts related to geological programmes (e.g., drilling, site preparation); and
* Liaising with consultants, mine planning and technical staff within BHPB Iron Ore, and internal and external stakeholders, including JV partners.
* Providing local support/knowledge for development study and environmental teams working on the Nimba project will also form part of your scope.
* As a functional leader on site, you will also play an important role in supporting the Operations Manager by demonstrating high standards of personal and team behaviour at all times.
Skills and Experience
Degree qualified, you will have significant geological experience, including remote site experience, along with demonstrated skills in Iron Ore resource evaluation, drilling program management and geological modelling. A strong commitment to HSEC, cultural sensitivity and the ability to work collaboratively with other functional groups are essential, as is a commitment to completing geological work to the highest standards. Experience in the use of geological modelling packages (e.g, Vulcan) and GIS will be highly regarded. This is a critical role in the successful evaluation of the Nimba deposit; hence, outstanding leadership, communication and influencing skills are a must.
Fluency in English is essential. French language skills or the desire to learn the language will also be well regarded.
Location
This secondment/contract opportunity will be for a period of 12 months (with possible extension for an additional 12 months). The role will be based in London on a 4 week on/ 2 week off FIFO roster rotation into Guinea.
