ROLE PROFILE:

BHP Billiton Petroleum’s mission is to create shareholder value through the discovery, acquisition, development and production of petroleum natural resources. This position will provide subsurface geoscience supervision and representation for the company-operated Macedon and the non-operated Browse Australian development projects. As the Subsurface Geoscience Supervisor for Macedon and Browse, HSE, Quality, Regulatory, Resource, Reserves and Risk Assessment/Mitigation, Contingency planning and other associated programs are managed according to BHPB Corporate and Petroleum standards, policies and practices. The Subsurface Geoscience Supervisor for Macedon and Browse will supervise all geological, geophysical, and petrophysical work related to the Macedon and Browse developments. Eventually this position is envisioned to also encompass the Thebe development. This role involves occasional business travel (up to 4 times per year) to Australia.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:

* Provide effective geoscience leadership and work planning, coordination, technical oversight/assurance, technology application, quality measurement and approvals in order to maximize the value of the Macedon and Browse developments and help achieve stated business goals, tollgates and project milestones. These commitments are to be managed by using support services available to and within the Macedon IPT and delegating responsibilities to team members, when appropriate.
* Provide leadership, timely feedback and foster teamwork in order to motivate staff and establish work environment, work systems and practices that maximize opportunities for staff to achieve job satisfaction, technical and interpersonal growth and, consequently, contribute effectively and craft innovation solutions to subsurface challenges.
* To communicate with JV partners and regulatory bodies on geoscience/petrophysical technical issues and expedite their approvals, as necessary.
* Work with Development Geoscience Manager, Development Planning and Geoscience Chief(s)/Function to ensure compliance to functional standards, protocols and personnel development.
* Adhere to HSEC Policy and Management Standards.
* Support HSEC initiatives and ensure compliance with the agreed HSEC procedures and practices of all activities in areas of discipline responsibil

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Subsurface Geoscience Supervisor for Macedon/Browse Development projects will work in a team environment and be responsible for all geoscience and petrophysical work activities concerning the Macedon and Browse fields. Main roles and responsibilities include:

1. As venture Operator for Macedon, supervise and direct the Macedon Subsurface Geoscience team to ensure the team provides high quality analyses/assessments/evaluations in an accurate and timely manner.

2. As Joint Venturer on Browse, influence the operator to maximize the value of the development and help achieve stated business goals and milestones. In addition, represent/communicate BHPB’s technical view of in-place field volumes in near-future Browse field equity discussions with the Operator and Joint Venture partners

3. Provide performance feedback in semi-annual and annual performance reviews and participate in work goal setting and development goal construction for Geoscience team staff.

4. Development planning, reservoir characterization/modeling and assessments of associated subsurface, drilling, and production uncertainties.

5. Development execution, monitoring and reporting of drilling activities, geological modeling, oversight and responsibility for timely delivery of geotechnical related studies.

6. Lead initiatives to promote visible and pro-active management commitment and team involvement in HSE and quality activities/initiatives.

7. Assist the Project Director in ensuring that the Project properly adheres to the Joint Operating Agreement and as required provide counsel, assistance and support to the Macedon Project Director.

8. Develop budgets, plans and contingency plans, monitor budgets, issue geoscience related MOC’s (Management of Change) and DRS’s (Decision Record Sheets) as appropriate and ensure key project milestones and objectives are realized.

9. Provide leadership and foster teamwork in order to motivate staff and establish work environment, work systems and practices that maximize opportunities for staff to achieve job satisfaction and, consequently, contribute effectively.

10. Develop and maintain employees’ professional and technical expertise by providing challenging work assignments for geoscience staff and through the provision of effective coaching, training as required and mentoring.

11. Liaise, cultivate and maintain interfaces with Engineering teams, Development Planning, Well/Completions Engineering team, HSE and Well Ops, Facilities and Subsea engineering, Production Operations, and Technology Specialists as and when appropriate to ensure full integration of activities.

12. Maintain a culture of mutual respect within the team and with all interactions with other teams.

13. Develop, maintain and manage networks and relationships with key individuals, other BHPB development and JIU/PU teams, government bodies, key consultants (e.g. regulatory staff) and joint venture partners.

14. Participate actively in well planning/execution teams and provide guidance on well locations, well data collection and contingency planning.

15. Ensure necessary documentation for appropriate government regulatory submittals is done accurately and meets requisite deadlines.

16. Communicate the team’s technical results, technical position, conclusions and recommendations to Subsurface engineering team, IPT, joint venture partners and operator and BHP Billiton management in both formal and informal forums.

17. Ensure effective implementation of BHPB Petroleum policies and practices, BHP Billiton Leadership model, governance requirements (budgets, BPS), and applicable regulations.

18. As needed, ensure effective handovers occur when the Development(s) transition to the Execution phase.

AUTHORITY & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

The position reports directly to the Development Geoscience Manager. It is semi-technical in nature.

The Subsurface Geoscience Supervisor for Macedon/Browse will supervise a multi-disciplinary team of approximately 4-6 geoscientists (geologists, geophysicists and petrophysicists). The Subsurface Geoscience Supervisor Macedon/Browse will work closely with Macedon/Browse Subsurface Engineering staff and associated engineering team(s) to insure that the team works in an integrated manner.

* Perth Exploration Team
* Geological Operations Team staff
* Drilling and Completions Team staff
* GTT, PGT, HSE, Regulatory, Data Management and other Functional teams
* Functional Chiefs
* Joint Venture partners and Operator
* Other Development teams as needed

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience and technical competencies:

* Experience with operated deepwater developments is desired as is experience with geological modeling, reservoir characterization, deepwater well planning and drilling operations.
* The ability to provide technical direction to in-house technology staff and consultants.
* Good technical communicator (written and spoken) and influencing skills.
* Excellent collaboration skills.

Qualifications:

* Masters degree in relevant science discipline required.
* A minimum of 10 years relevant experience in the upstream petroleum industry
* A strong background in offshore field development is required in addition to partner relationship-building skills.
* A working knowledge of deepwater depositional systems is necessary.
