BHP Billiton is all about smart technology, innovation and great talent. If you want a challenging career and a chance to explore resource opportunities as well as your ambitions, we’re the company for you. Think ahead. Think BHP Billiton.
Background

BHP Billiton Petroleum’s Business Units are exploring, appraising, developing and producing petroleum resources in some of the most challenging environments in the world. An experienced geoscientist is required to support the needs of these Business Units for improved wellbore integration, depth/ velocity calibration and prediction, seismic time-depth conversion, and pore pressure prediction.
Position Description:

Provide responsive, innovative and high quality petroleum geoscience input, analysis and advice to the Interpretive Velocity Modelling Team of Geoscience Technology. The focus of the position is to bring relevant wellbore velocity information to the seismic imaging and calibration process. The position will involve the timely and effective provision of technical support in the deployment of new technologies in areas such as:

• Integration of seismic, wellbore geophysics, wireline log and pore pressure data, inclusive of attribute analysis, uncertainty assessment, and anisotropy parameterization

• Depth/ velocity calibration of seismic volumes, including checkshot and sonic data analysis and interpretation and lithology-based well correlation to seismic

• Development of seismically based surface and volume stratigraphic model frameworks, including pore pressure volume derivation from calibrated seismic volumes

• Construction of 3D velocity models for seismic imaging and anisotropy studies

• Participation in borehole geophysics planning for velocity survey acquisition and implementation.

• Collaboration with geoscientists and engineers to provide input to well planning and pore pressure prediction.
Experience and Technical Competencies Required:

• Sound knowledge of wellbore geophysics, well tie procedures, velocity modelling, depositional environments, drilling procedures, and static model development

• Exposure to seismic imaging, interpretation and modelling, synthetic seismic generation, inversion procedures, seismic attribute analysis, anisotropy concepts, petro-elastic modelling, geostatistics, and lithological classification for technology development projects

• Experience in Linux/ Unix based technical computing, with a good understanding of 3D interpretation, modelling and visualisation computer applications

• Strong capability in general computing, scripting, and MS Office tools

• Good written and verbal communication and team influencing skills

• Good project planning and reporting skills

• Experience in an operational petroleum company in a similar role would be advantageous.
Qualifications Required:

A Bachelors or Masters degree in geoscience (or equivalent), with a strong emphasis on well log based interpretation relating to seismic and velocity analysis.
Accountabilities:

• Provide responsive wellbore data integration advice and services, working with geoscientists, engineers and the Interpretive Velocity Modelling Team to deploy high quality workflows, applications and project solutions

• Execute Business Unit funded and supported projects in the areas of wellbore integration, depth/ velocity calibration and prediction, seismic time-depth conversion, and pore pressure prediction. Examples include:

o Well ties to seismic

Establish well ties to seismic using synthetics based on wellbore data analysis, the classification and interpretation of wireline logs, and their integration with seismic scale wellbore velocities from checkshot and VSP data o Depth/ velocity calibration

Apply velocity scaling techniques to calibrate seismic data using accurate depth and velocity models, with subsequent application to pore pressure prediction and anisotropic seismic processing o Pore pressure integration

Collaboration with engineers regarding the interpretation of pressure-related drilling data from LWD logs, drilling parameters, leak-off tests, cuttings, formation tests and wireline logs

• Participation in design, acquisition, processing and interpretation of borehole seismic surveys.

• Involvement in gravity modelling studies that require seismic calibration and log integration.

• Support Reservoir Technology development efforts in wellbore integration for depth calibration and pore pressure prediction.

• Develop and maintain networks and relationships with key peers and colleagues both within business teams (across the Exploration, Development and Production Divisions) and external organisations for purposes of information and ideas sharing and capability development.

• Assist in the capture of opportunities to apply new or improved geoscience and engineering technologies which add to the value of Business Unit operations.

• Help identify gaps in standards and guidelines relating to Wellbore Integration and, in conjunction with Business Units and as directed, action plans and documentation to close gaps.

• Assist with the development of internal and external benchmarking for all aspects of Wellbore Integration and advise management and the business of best practices.

• Undertake Wellbore Integration coaching and mentoring within business teams as required.

• Assist with the development of a communications infrastructure for Wellbore Integration to ensure comprehensive two-way (business - function) reporting and communication. This includes contributing to the development of the Geoscience Technology Portal, document management system, e-rooms, Communities of Practice, etc.

• Perform technology related administrative tasks in an effective and efficient manner and contribute to the achievement of team goals and objectives.

THINK OF THE OPPORTUNITIES WITHIN BHP BILLITON. THINK LOCAL. THINK GLOBAL.

With 38,000 employees working in more than 100 operations in approximately 25 countries, we represent the world’s largest diversified resources company. We take our commitment to the communities in which we operate and do business in very seriously, and we are committed to operating safely and sustainably.
