R&D Project Manager (Mining & drilling techniques)

Our Client is a major minerals company operating globally. The Mining Business Unit operations cover the first phase of the energy cycle and consist of four main activities: mineral exploration (discovering new ore deposits), mining (extraction of energy minerals), ore processing and site reclamation following mining activities. The company operates a number of mines and mineral process plants in Francophone West Africa.

The Mining BU is keen to take full advantage of the advanced technology developed by the R&D unit to improve industrial performance in producing energy feedstocks. R&D is also a means of implementing the sustainable development policy, which is a key factor in maintaining the Company’s competitive edge.

Working within the R&D Department, you will act as PROJECT MANAGER for a research platform focused on mining and drilling techniques. The aim of the project is to develop new drilling technologies and improve existing mining techniques to render them more efficient, more profitable, safer and cleaner.

>> As an R&D Project Manager, you have to:
- Define scientific content and planning for the project;
- Coordinate the project and lead implementation up to the industrial development stage;
- Supervise the project team, ensuring the availability of internal and external resources;
- Manage annual and quarterly project budgets;
- Develop and maintain relations with organisations at the forefront of the field of mining and drilling techniques;
- Set up an industrial chair for mining techniques;
- Define and manage project deliverables in line with customers’ priorities;
- Validate the technical reports published within the framework of the project;
- Be involved in setting up R&D processes (theses, patents, technology watch, building on knowledge, etc.);
- Coordinate synergy between the Mining BU and the Engineering BU in the area of drilling and mining machine design;
- Work closely with the Group’s Technology, Research and Innovation Department.

>> Profile:
- You will be a qualified Mining Engineer from the Ecole des Mines or hold a Doctorate in mining or drilling techniques from another internationally recognised tertiary education institution;
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in project management and coordination and 5 years’ experience in research, innovation and development;
- You will have proven experience in managing technological projects at mining sites and/or have extensive knowledge of drilling techniques in the oil or other sector;
- With an excellent command of project management tools, you will be keen to ensure implementation of good practices and continuous improvement initiatives;
- You will be an efficient manager of project team skills, with the ability to prioritize, manage any changes and resolve technical conflicts;
- You must have excellent communication skills and be fluent in French and English;
- You will be expected to travel to the Group’s various units in France and worldwide;
- You should be highly motivated, curious and dynamic, able to demonstrate rigorous attention to detail, an innovative spirit and sense of commitment.
