Barrick Gold Corporation is the world’s largest gold mining company. Headquartered in Toronto, Canada – Barrick currently has a portfolio of 27 mining operations, many advanced exploration projects located across five continents and large land positions on the world’s most prolific and prospective mineral trends. Barrick’s Australia Pacific region is home to ten of the company’s mining operations, with its regional head office located in Perth, Western Australia.

Barrick is seeking a Regional Manager in its Global Internal Audit Group to manage the internal audit activities in our Australia-Pacific Business Unit.

This position would suit candidates who have superior accounting and auditing experience and business acumen and who are looking to showcase their talents while advancing their knowledge of Barrick’s business and accounting processes.

Position Overview

Based at Barrick’s Regional Office in Perth, Western Australia and reporting to the Toronto, Canada-based Senior Director, Global Internal Audit.

The successful candidate will manage, and when necessary conduct financial and operational audits on a risk-assessed basis across Barrick’s Australia-Pacific operations. While the role’s primary geographic focus is Australia-Pacific, the individual may periodically be called upon to travel to Barrick’s other operations around the world.

Duties & Responsibilities

Develop a risk-based regional Internal Audit Plan which forms part of the Department’s Global Internal Audit Plan

• Manage, and when necessary conduct financial and/or operational audit engagements and perform special projects requested by management.
• Work with management to identify risks that would prevent achievement of their business/process objectives, and determine whether appropriate controls are in place to mitigate these risks.
• Provide leadership, instruction and general guidance to supporting team members as required.
• Establish strong relationships with co-source service providers
• Engage and manage subject matter experts and other external resources in the execution of specific audits
• Review, and when necessary prepare audit reports and working papers that support opinions and recommendations to improve process, system and control deficiencies
• Manage the internal audit customer relationship from the planning stage through to completion of the audit engagement. Ensure management is kept apprised of audit activities/findings, communicate audit results and recommended actions to management, and determine if appropriate and timely action is being taken for significant items previously reported
• Liaise with external auditors as necessary
• Facilitate the transfer of leading practices and standards across the business through interaction with Barrick’s Business/Continuous Improvement function
• Adhere to all organizational and professional ethical standards

Qualifications & Experience

• An Undergraduate Degree as well as a professional accounting designation (ICA, CPA or the like)
• Achievement or advanced standing toward CIA designations is highly desirable
• Minimum of 5 years of progressive internal audit experience with mid to large size corporations, of which at least two years has been in a managerial capacity
• Good knowledge of GAAP, as well as and the COSO control framework. Familiarity with COBIT would be an asset
• Excellent report writing and interpersonal skills
• Able to effectively deal with all levels in the organization
• Leadership, delegation and outstanding project management skills
• Strong administrative and time management skills
• Superior organizational, analytical and communication (written and verbal) skills
• Enthusiastic, highly-motivated, able to work independently, yet be a team player
• Ability to effectively interact with senior management (both at the Regional Office and the global Corporate Office)
• Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with matters of a sensitive nature
• Exposure to, and understanding of, Information Technology audit concepts and issues
• Understanding of Sarbanes-Oxley legislation and associated compliance requirements
• Experience in the resource sector would be highly desirable

Please note that applicants should be comfortable with the prospect of international travel which can include remote destinations in developing countries for periods of up to three weeks.
