Position Summary
Conducts studies, analyzes and synthesizes resultant data to determine the possible effects of mine development and operation on the National Monument environment. Operates and maintains systems to prevent or minimize negative effects on that environment, by performing the following duties personally or through subordinates and other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Position
Responsible for field data collection activities in water (ultra-low level metals; surface & ground freshwater, ocean), maintenance of groundwater wells and surface water collection sites, soils/rock, meteorology, geotechnical monitoring using a variety of density, water level, and moisture measurement techniques, and air quality. Collects and synthesizes data derived from monitoring activities; prepares graphs, charts, and statistical models in support of data understanding, tracking and reporting. Conducts environmental effects assessments, and presents results in reports to both corporate and regulatory agencies. Work within Environmental Management System employing Environmental Standards. Participate in and updates hazardous material/waste minimization, handling and disposal programs. Assist with spill prevention and response program and maintenance of associated equipment. Oversee domestic drinking and waste water treatment/delivery systems, as well as compliance monitoring and reporting. Conducts review and monitoring of inactive site’s reclamation closure. Plan and conduct field application of site treatments. Assist with research projects involving forest soils, ARD, geochemistry, bio-monitoring, hydrology, or reclamation covers. Functional use of the environmental databases (Access and Excel, transition to SQL), and reporting of relevant information within the company. Also participate in the operation, equipment maintenance, data acquisition and reporting of the NPDES required monitoring system. Works with Environmental staff of six. Observes and participates with other Department staffs, and performs work place inspections to determine compliance with regulatory and company environmental standards. Participate in technical development growth of Technicians and self. Other duties may be assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, employees may be frequently required to stand, walk or sit for extended periods of time; use hand and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; regularly required to talk and hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision requirements for this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Employees may be frequently exposed to underground work environments; outside weather conditions, wet and/or humid conditions; extreme cold, extreme heat, potentially hazardous wildlife; moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; explosives and vibration. The noise level in most work environments is usually very loud. This position may require work on nights, weekends and rotating shifts; shift schedules may require residency in on-island camp during work rotations.
Education Requirements
BS in an environmentally-related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience
2-5 years experience in mining industry: Experience and familiarity with job functions as described.
Training or Special Skills
Proficient with database, spreadsheet and word processing. Understanding of RCRA, DOT and USCG shipping regulations, Environmental regulations to mining; instrumentation & field monitoring systems.
