Location: Australia BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s mining operations in the spectacular Pilbara region of WA are one of the largest in the world, shipping more than 120Mtpa of iron ore. Our railways, consisting of more than 800km of track, connect our mines in the Pilbara with our shipping facilities in Port Hedland. The heavy haulage rail system, the heaviest in the world, with more than 100 locomotives and around 4,500 carriages, uses state of the art technology across all facets of the operation.
Position Synopsis
Operating in a climate of continuous improvement, you will facilitate the diagnosing and repair of mechanical faults. Your focus will be on achieving the highest attainable availability of all locomotives and compressor cars to allow the railroad to operate at optimum levels.
Accepting ownership of your tasks, you will apply your high level of technical skill and expertise in carrying out the following responsibilities:
* Undertaking fault finding, repair and maintenance work on locomotives;
* Inspecting and brake testing locomotives;
* Utilising computer based maintenance systems;
* Fault finding and problem solving; and
* Maintaining the associated infrastructure.
Skills and Experience
To be considered, it is essential that you have a mechanical trade qualification, with post trade experience, preferably in the maintenance of railroad rolling stock, or similar heavy industry. A "C" class driver’s licence and proficiency with computers are also necessary. Committed to continuously achieving the required maintenance standards, you will display excellent fault finding skills and a sound working knowledge of Quality Assurance principals.
As this is a shift role your effective communication skills will be applied to facilitating shift changeovers, and providing advice and support to fellow technicians and apprentices. Your technical strengths will be complemented by good interpersonal skills, effective written and oral communication capabilities, and a proven ability to operate with limited supervision. Training on locomotives and/or ore cars will be provided as required.
Serious contenders must be able to demonstrate their commitment to taking personal responsibility for the achievement of the production plan in an Injury/ Incident free environment.
Location
This is a residential role, based in Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Located on the coast, Port Hedland is the largest regional centre in the North West, close to Broome, Karratha and Karijini National Park. The 15,000-strong population enjoys well-established education service, entertainment, sporting, shopping and medical facilities, and a strong sense of community.
