THE POSITION
The BHPB Petroleum Reporting team is part of the Petroleum Controller’s group and is responsible for: developing and delivering Petroleum’s actual reporting to the Petroleum Leadership Team and Corporate; external reporting, preparation of statutory financial statements for various countries; financial analysis; performance management and compliance activities. The team works directly with the CFO, other groups within the Petroleum Controller’s group, business partners (operations), the global Shared Business Services organization and Group (corporate) reporting to deliver on these external reporting and compliance objectives.
This position will assume responsibilities across Financial Accounting and Reporting, Accounting Advice and Policy setting and internal Corporate Governance
This position reports directly to the Supervisor, External Reporting and Policy
Experience & Qualifications Required
* CPA / MBA / ACA / ACCA / MA in accounting or commerce
* 5 years (minimum) - 7 years (preferable) experience in financial and technical accounting gained from experience in public accounting or corporate financial reporting roles
* Flexible and highly motivated (a self-starter) with a passion for the Oil and Gas sector and the ability to communicate clearly with all levels of the organization
* Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills
* Solid analytical skills and financial knowledge, including understanding of process controls, financial controls and risk assessment
* Superior negotiation and influencing skills and the ability to communicate effectively at different levels, including non-finance personnel
* Experience in SAP would be highly regarded
* Contributing to the delivery of financial processes in an efficient, timely and accurate manner; and implement improvements (process simplification) as required
* Participation in Petroleum-specific special projects as required
* Manage compliance activities in accordance with corporate governance policies
* Able to manage multiple/conflicting priorities with a strong track record of delivery
* Team player who is able to develop effective networks and relationships within the team and organization
* Strong understanding of how Finance processes and systems operate, including key internal interfaces and with multiple stakeholders
Accountabilities
Financial Accounting and Reporting
* Preparation and review of Petroleum’s statutory reporting requirements under International Financial Reporting Standards
* Act as the primary interface with external auditors for the audit of local statutory accounts
* Performance of the IFRS disclosure checklist required for all financial statements
* Completing the Petroleum CSG Briefing Papers and other Group requirements at half-year and year-end
* Preparing the Supplementary Oil and Gas notes to BHP Billiton’s Group Financial Statements required for SEC reporting
* Coordinating the annual Form 20F- Description of Petroleum business required for US SEC reporting
* Preparation of the OIL certification gross asset report
* Management of legal entities and associated funding, including (i) review and recommendation of dividend payments from Petroleum entities from an accounting perspective and (ii) management of inter-company loans (ensure that companies are properly funded)
* Dealing with Treasury and ensuring all monthly and quarterly requirements are met (e.g. Debt confirmations and monitoring of bank and inter-company guarantees
Accounting advice and policy setting
* Provide technical policy and accounting advice to Petroleum stakeholders including senior management, Controllers Group, Business Partners and Group, which are spread all over the globe
* Issue Petroleum specific accounting policies that improve the consistency of the application of accounting policy within the Petroleum CSG and ensure adherence to Group policy
* Assist in the coordination of the Accounting Matter for Consideration Process (formal reporting of technical matters to corporate) for the Petroleum CSG and ensure close-out of all recorded action items from the Accounting Matters for Consideration
Corporate Governance
* Assist the Supervisor, External Reporting and Policy in overseeing Petroleum’s global stewardship and governance processes
* Assist the Supervisor, External Reporting and Policy in the preparation of the Petroleum Risk and Audit Committee papers
* Monitor and maintain the Petroleum Issues Register including legal issues, stewardship issues and external audit matters raised
* Manage various interactions with company secretariat (e.g. annual solvency and liquidation processes)
