This is a senior position reporting directly to the Managing Director of the mine company.
The position will require a high level of personal interaction with Company management and staff, project staff and contractors personnel. Interaction with regulatory authorities and Labour Organisations may also be required from time to time. A significant component of the work will involve site inspections, field audits and site tours to observe working procedures, to meet with and discuss safety matters with workers, supervisors and managers alike and to collect information that will assist in developing better safety management practices. To be effective, the incumbent will need to demonstrate a high level of motivation, leadership skills, show initiative and be able to work unsupervised.
The objective of this Company is to create a safety culture that will accept nothing less than a zero injury work environment. To do this the Safety Coordinator’s role will include but not be limited to the following activities:
• Ensure the sustainability of the Company’s business activities through best practice safety management systems.
• Review of all existing safety practices and procedures reflecting ”best practice”, addressing the requirements of the construction phase of the project as well as the operational phase.
• Improve existing safety documentation and prepare new safety procedures.
• Review and document the safety management plan(s) of each contractor employed.
• Prepare a register of insurances held by each contractor and assess cover adequacy.
• Establish an effective safety reporting and incident investigation system.
• Establish an effective system for ensuring all new starters receive a comprehensive site induction.
• Set up and maintain an active safety propaganda program which will include; safety posters, newsletters, training and regular safety meetings.
• Ensure site compliance with Norwegian legislative requirements.
• Design and implement a site-wide, operational phase safety system to be kept current.
• Carry out safety inspections, safety audits and risk assessments and train team members to do likewise.
• Establish safety training programs covering safety skills development, safety awareness, and safe working practices.
• Establish and maintain an effective document control system as required for legal, insurance and compliance reasons as well as for trend and behavioural analysis.
• Carry out and facilitate accident and incident investigations with particular reference to improving mitigation and prevention measures.
• Recruit and train staff for an operational phase safety department, also source and train a successor from within Scandinavia with the objective of localising this role within 2-years.
• Oversee the establishment of mine rescue and first response capability as well as first response capability at the process plant.
• Establish emergency response plans and procedures.
• Put in place a process of regular training, refresher training and continual review for compliance and effectiveness.
Candidates for this role will need to be bilingual, speaking English and at least one of the Scandinavian languages.
