Barrick is headquartered in Toronto, Canada and has 27 mining operations with many advanced exploration projects located across 5 continents and a large number of tenements located on some of the most prolific and prospective mineral trends. 12 of Barricks mines and mining projects are located in North America, with the Pueblo Viejo project falling under this jurisdiction.

Pueblo Viejo is one of Barrick's highest profile projects. Located in the Dominican Republic, this mine is projected to be one of Barrick's greatest gold producers utilizing state of the art mining and processing technology. Located approximately 90 minutes from Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic's capital, it will contribute greatly to the local economy for years to come.

The Pueblo Viejo project is a joint venture between Barrick Gold Corporation (60%) and GoldCorp (40%) and will be operated by Barrick through the Pueblo Viejo Dominicana Corporation (PVDC).

PVDC is currently looking for a Senior Training and Safety Officer.

Position Overview:

The incumbent is responsible for establishing, implementing and coordinating the process maintenance training and safety programs to ensure a safe, competent and productive maintenance workforce.

Core skill development of a large maintenance group is integral in the success of the project and will provide many challenges in the early stages.

The position will initially be based in Vancouver, with relocation to the Dominican Republic during 2010.

Duties and Responsibilities - Pre Operating phase

* Contribute to defining the core skills and competencies for the process maintenance trade areas.
* Develop accredited trade training competency and certification programs for the process maintenance department working with third party training providers as required.
* Implement, coordinate, actively monitor, and report the effectiveness of the maintenance certification programs to meet the operational needs of the project.
* In consultation with senior maintenance personnel, define a foundation system to determine and track the training needs and objectives to support the specific maintenance activity requirements of the process plant.
* Coordinate vendor specific training with the commissioning team.
* Participate in defining and implementing safety policies and procedures for both operations and maintenance to ensure compliance with corporate, regulatory, statutory and industry best practice requirements.
* Participate in the development of Standard Operating Procedures, (SOP’s), Standard Maintenance Procedures (SMP’s), Workplace Inspections and Task Observations.
* Build a team of Maintenance training and safety personnel.

Duties and Responsibilities - Operational Phase

* Partner with other PVDC training professionals to achieve efficient coordination of common training.
* Effectively supervise training and safety personnel to achieve effective delivery of training and safety programs.
* Work closely with maintenance general foremen and supervisors to determine training needs for personnel and the development of individual training plans.
* Continually monitor the progress of training participants to ensure satisfactory performance in the development of competent personnel to meet the localisation and man power requirements of management.
* Plan, implement and monitor maintenance safety activities including training and certification programs, inspections, and investigations.
* Continually monitor and report on maintenance training, safety and environmental performance.
* Manage all of the safety and training records and programs for process maintenance.
* Continually review all aspects of the safety and training activities to ensure opportunities are identified to add value to the maintenance group.
* Conduct performance evaluations of team members.
* Contribute to the maintenance budgeting process for safety and training

Qualifications:

* Completion of a certified program of competence in industrial maintenance, at trade or diploma level.
* Leadership or supervisory training.
* Formal qualification in adult education.
* Recognised safety certification is desirable.
* 5+ years of experience in maintenance in a hydrometallurgical plant, with at least 3 years in a training and development or supervisory and leadership position.
* Previous experience in the successful development and implementation of maintenance training programs.
* Previous experience working in a developing country.
* Demonstrated ability leading and developing a multicultural team.
* Proficient in the use of Microsoft products and ERP systems.
* Demonstrated skills and knowledge of safety processes and systems in a modern processing facility.
* Coordination of training activities with equipment vendors and third party providers.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and able to speak, read, and write in English.
* Bilingual English/Spanish highly preferred.
