Barrick is headquartered in Toronto, Canada and has 27 mining operations with many advanced exploration projects located across 5 continents and a large number of tenements located on some of the most prolific and prospective mineral trends. 9 of Barrick’s mining operations are found within the Australia Pacific region, with its regional head office located in Perth, Western Australia.
Position Overview:
This newly created position in our Environment, Health & Safety department reports to the EMS and Compliance Manager – Environment and will play a vital role in the development and implementation of the Barrick Gold Environmental Management System. In this challenging role you will assist in establishing a culture of continually improving Environment Management Systems that fully integrate Environmental Management into the operations during the complete life cycle of the mine, from design to post-closure activities.
Duties & Responsibilities include:
• Participate in the development of the compliance management systems for all sites in the Region, ensuring all legal and other obligations are included (e.g. Cyanide Code, EDC). This includes the co-ordination of compliance assessments at a site level
• Review government legislation, policies and plans which affect Barrick’s regional operations, and advise operational personnel of the changes and potential implications.
• Maintain watching brief on latest industry developments in best practice environmental management, incorporate these changes into Barrick’s practices and communicate changes to operational personnel.
• Participate in Corporate Environmental audits (Env, ORT and Tailings Management), and assists in the preparation and completion of Action Plans as appropriate.
• Co-ordinate the reporting of Audit status
• Support the use and maintenance of Corporate and Regional reporting requirements (i.e. RIMS).
• Participate in, and review, significant incident investigations, and assists in the preparation and completion of Action Plans as appropriate
Experience & Requirements:
• Tertiary qualifications (Bachelor degree level) in Environmental Science, Geology, Biology or a related discipline are mandatory
• Post graduate qualifications in Environment will be well regarded
• Significant experience gained in an environmental position in the Mining/Resources industry
• Demonstrated knowledge of company environmental policies and objectives
• Knowledge of environmental issues within the Mining industry
• Highly developed communication and presentation skills and an ability to respond and work well under pressure
