Position Summary:
At the direction of the Maintenance Manager, conducts and/or oversees research, design, installation, testing, operation, troubleshooting and repair of electrical and power generation and distribution components, equipment, and systems in an efficient, safe and environmentally responsible manner by performing the following duties.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Position:
To provide a resource for the design and application of electrical equipment, facilities, components, and systems for use in underground & surface mining, mineral processing, power generation and shiploading environments.
• Responsible for electrical utilities, process control, variable speed drives, motor controls and other electrical/electronic systems, including:
• Maintains electrical power stability and safety, ensuring code compliance in equipment design, installation, operation and maintenance.
• Generates and reviews electrical equipment design and wiring drawings, specifications and cost estimates for both high and low voltage power distribution systems for both self generated and public utility sourced power.
• Establish and maintain electrical asset management system through equipment diagnosis, condition-based monitoring and optimal maintenance planning; responds to power interruptions and power quality problems.
• Creates and analyzes single line diagrams of power flow through equipment, formulate strategies for improving process equipment resilience to voltage sags and momentary outages through available power filter topologies, etc.
• Facilitates electrical power-related communication with mine and plant customers, contractors, utility companies and suppliers.
• Uses computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering tasks.
• Directs, reviews, coordinates and approves electrical engineering activities for facility needs and design projects and the design and development of plans for electrical systems for construction, maintenance, or repair projects associated with facility operations.
• Conducts field surveys to investigate existing equipment conditions, analyze system needs, make calculations, and determine requirements.
• Prepares designs and layouts of electrical and mechanical systems with regard to size, space, capacities, and economy and provide technical specifications for electrical portions of construction, maintenance or repair projects accomplished by employees and/or contractors.
• Employs knowledge of electrical engineering concepts, principles, and methods and knowledge of related fields such as structural and mechanical engineering.
• Directs and coordinates operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment and systems in field installations, coordinating with affected departments.
• Coordinates on-site activities with local utility company to ensure smooth coordination of purchased and self generated power.
• Offers expertise to other sites within the company as needed.

While performing the duties of this job, employees may be frequently required to stand, walk or sit for extended periods of time; use hand and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; regularly required to talk and hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision requirements for this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Employees may be frequently exposed to underground work environments; outside weather conditions, wet and/or humid conditions; extreme cold, extreme heat, potentially hazardous wildlife; moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; explosives and vibration. The noise level in most work environments is usually very loud. This position may require work on nights, weekends and rotating shifts; shift schedules may require residency in on-island camp during work rotations.
Education Requirements
High School Diploma or equivalent. UG MSHA certification helpful, but not required.
Experience
Familiarity and experience with the above-mentioned equipment preferred.
