Capacity Manager Storage (Copenhagen, Denmark)

Information:

Posted: 27 Apr 2012
Apply deadline: 26 Jul 2012
Location: Copenhagen, Denmark
Company: Maersk

Job description:

Job profile/Overview of the Role
Capacity Management is the discipline that ensures IT infrastructure is provided at the right time in the right volume at the right price, and ensuring that IT is used in the most efficient manner.

This involves input from many areas of the business to identify what services are (or will be) required, what IT infrastructure is required to support these services, what level of Contingency will be needed, and what the cost of this infrastructure will be.

The Capacity Manager’s role is to ensure that the capacity for the IT resources is utilised in the most optimal and cost effective way. This involves interfacing with the various internal and external stakeholders in all stages of the service life cycle (e.g. in the design and operation phases).
The main sources for capacity optimization are the outsourcing vendors, who manage the capacity, and the business, who are the consumers of capacity. Therefore, an important task for the Capacity Manager is to challenge and encourage the outsourcing vendors to continually optimise the management of capacity, e.g. by making best use of available technologies. In addition, a close cooperation with the Business is required to address capacity both in defining the business requirements, which demand IT capacity, as well as in daily business for the continual improvement of capacity utilisation. Stakeholder awareness will be an important part of the interaction with the Business in order to improve the understanding of how capacity is assessed, how the business impacts the capacity and how they can assist with improved forecasting.

The Capacity Manager will be part of a team of three Capacity Managers covering storage, mainframe and midrange. The team setup is meant to ensure the proper focus for each area, while also allowing sparring and process sharing. Therefore, a Capacity Manager is considered both as an individual contributor for his own area as well as a part of a close cooperation between the team members.

Storage is growing at a high rate, so primary focus for the Storage Capacity Manager will be to control the growth as well as reducing increasing costs. Consequently, cost optimisation initiatives will be one of the main areas of responsibility. Second, there is a need for analysing what drives the costs and how the growth for the cost drivers can be controlled. This involves investigating possibilities for reducing both high availability storage (tier 1/Gold) as well as backup, both of which account for a large portion and significant growth. Thirdly, new technologies such as Cloud Services need to be incorporate into the current processes. Other key activities for the Capacity Manager will be forecasting of storage usage and managing the capacity (to reduce costs and to predict future investment needs).

Duties & Responsibilities
The Capacity Manager must:
• Define, document, communicate and continually improve processes for storage.
• Ensure alignment of processes with mainframe and midrange; standardization must be pursued for capacity management where relevant/possible.
• Provide input for storage budgets.
• Ensure invoice verification for storage.
• Carry out trend analysis and ensure communication of relevant trends to the business.
• Provide input to internal controllers regarding cost allocation methods for storage and ensure that internal controllers receive the necessary data to do the cost allocation.
• Do vendor management and follow-up, including participating in bi-weekly vendor meetings.
• Identify, initiate and follow up on improvement projects and initiatives for storage; includes performing sensitivity analysis, creating Business ideas in brief (Biib’s) and business cases, agreeing on initiatives with the vendors and the business, etc.
• Create incentives for key stakeholders, including making suggestions for internal KPIs.
• Act as interface to the business; includes collecting forecasting input for annual capacity plans (annual exercise), agreeing on capacity initiatives (annual exercise and on-going), providing the business with trends, arranging focus group meetings, etc.
• Ensure monitoring of capacity; day-to-day monitoring is mainly done by the vendors but the Capacity Manager must ensure proper follow-up (e.g. for the quality of data and reporting from the vendors). Also, ad-hoc monitoring should be provided as per request (e.g. for specific projects).
• Act as single Point of Contact and Subject Matter Expert for storage.
• Responsible for the storage budget.

Personal Spec
• Previous experience with capacity management is desirable but not essential.
• Previous experience with storage.
• Understanding of Cloud Services
• Knowledge of mainframe and midrange; to serve as sparring partner and possible backup within the capacity team.
• General experience with outsourced environments and vendor management.
• Experience with IT Service Management (preferably a qualification in ITIL)
• Good business understanding and ability to communicate with the business.
• Ability to work in collaborative manner with all Stakeholders including our Business community
• Project management experience.
• Good communication skills.
• Analytical mindset.
