MMG has just completed the acquisition of Anvil Mining, giving it an operational platform in the DRC with the Kinsevere mine, a 60,000tpa copper cathode producer in commissioning stage. Kinsevere is the first step in MMG's goal of building a substantial base metals business in sub-Saharan Africa and to support this goal MMG is opening an office in Johannesburg with senior representation from Business Development, Exploration and Project Delivery.
The key purpose of this role is to provide direct management, leadership and strategic direction for all energy related studies and projects in Africa. This role will also support and contribute to the company's strategic development in the region.
Based in MMG's new Johannesburg Office and reporting to the Manager Project Delivery - Africa, the key challenges you will face in this role will be to provide knowledge leadership in MMG's approach to obtain safe, secure and cost effective power sources for its operations in Africa and provide the necessary framework for successful studies and projects to be undertaken.
Specific accountabilities for the role include:
- Regional accountability for all nominated energy related capital studies and projects, with a strong focus on hydropower
- Delivery of all energy projects safely, on time and within budget by monitoring all projects, providing status reports and intervening if projects fall behind expectations
- Ongoing liaison with Exploration, M&A and Operations to facilitate efficient and effective project delivery
- Provision of energy technical assessments in M&A due diligence reviews
- Working with local and corporate Project Delivery Group to streamline project policies and procedures
- Establishing an appropriate profile for effective engagement with relevant engineering and project service providers and key MMG stakeholders
- Contributing to developing MMG's profile in the DRC
- Assisting with the identification and access to the South African industrial base where it may be of assistance to MMG's operations and project developments
We require you to be an experienced energy management professional. In considering your application, we will look for demonstrated experience from within the power generation and/or transmission industry, ideally with an emphasis on hydropower. You will need to have the capability to advise MMG on technical power solutions, manage power related projects and also be able to build relationships with key stakeholders from within the relevant government agencies. Tertiary qualifications in engineering or a related field are highly desirable. Substantial travel to the DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo) and other countries within Africa will form a key part of this role and you will need to be able to travel to these locations.
