Context: The Environmental Advisor supports the Environmental Department and the business unit through ownership of the solid and hazardous waste, recycling, reclamation and wildlife protection programs. This position will manage all day-to-day aspects of these programs, including management of contractors, with limited oversight in accordance with Rio Tinto HSEQ MA, Environment Standards and regulatory requirements. This position will also interface with the auditors and regulatory agency inspectors on waste, recycling, reclamation and wildlife protection issues.This position supports continuous improvement of environmental integration and compliance by serving as an internal consultant to key internal stakeholders, identifying areas where additional environmental awareness training is required, developing training content and serving as subject matter expert on assigned Environmental committees and cross-functional teams. The Environmental Advisor provides technical direction to the Environmental Technicians on waste management, recycling, reclamation and wildlife issues. The Environmental Advisor is a key participant in developing and supporting proactive, strategic approaches that support business objectives, protect the environment and are socially responsible. This position also identifies and supports the implementation of assigned business improvement projects and the development of upgrades to the environmental data management and GIS systems. The primary responsibilities for this position include:
- Ownership of the solid and hazardous waste, recycling , reclamation and wildlife protection programs.
- Managing contractors providing environmental services in accordance with RT Contractor Management (HSEQ MS Element 7) Standards.
- Interface with auditors and regulatory agency inspectors on waste, recycling, reclamation and wildlife protection issues.
- Serving as internal consultant and subject matter expert to key internal stakeholders.
- Identify environmental awareness training gaps and developing training content.
- Identify and implementing improvement to the HSEQ Management System.
- Take the initiative to identify and implement business improvement opportunities.
- Provide technical support for upgrading the environmental database management and GiS systems.
College/University Education:
- B.S. Degree in Engineering or environmental discipline
Other Qualifications:
- 4 years of progressively responsibility experience in environmental compliance and experience at an industrial facility.
- Experience in contact management.
- Must complete water bird rescue, desert tortoise handling and surface mining and reclamation training within six months of starting date.
