  • State of the art mining technology.
  • Challenging role with an opportunity to develop your skills.
  • Perth based Monday - Friday with irregular commute to a variety of Pilbara sites.

Rio Tinto has a long term vision to progressively introduce technology into its mining operations. This vision is called the Mine of the Future (MOTF). The MOTF is a "set of interlinking projects aimed at delivering demonstrable step-change improvements in productivity, cost, environmental performance, and product quality in surface and underground mining operations and associated mineral recovery technologies". RTIO in particular has become the focal point for the visible demonstration of advanced technologies as they apply to large scale open pit mines.  RTIO has achieved worldwide recognition for its advancement of automation technologies such as the operations centre, autonomous trucks and autonomous drills. RTIO is committed to create the Mine of the Future with the progressive implementation of key mining technologies such as autonomous trucks, drills and other technologies. The evaluation, implementation and support of these "Mine of the Future" technologies are the responsibility of a newly created centralised MOTF team. In addition, this team manages the integrated technology roadmap across all RTIO mining operations and works towards its business-wide realisation - from evaluation, preparation, implementation or deployment, to on-going operational support. As the Senior Mining Engineer you will form an integral part of the Mine of the Future (MOTF) Strategy and Studies team and play a key role in representing the MOTF team in pre-feasibility studies and other quantitative assessments required prior to during the implementation of new technologies. Key to your success in this role is your ability to analyse and track the estimated and real business value that MOTF technologies will have across sites. Utilising your strong communication skills, you will liaise effectively with different entities to ensure the continuous understanding of the key drivers and processes of the MOTF technologies and provide advice on how to best optimise the value to the business. To maintain the strategic development of MOTF you will also interact regularly with the Strategy Project Planning team to understand the direction of the business as well as Technology & Innovation and Original Equipment Manufacturer to understand the state of the technologies to be used in our operations. Reporting to the Principal Advisor Mine of the Future Strategy and Studies, the key responsibilities of your role will include but limited to the following:

  • Business case development & feasibility studies.
  • GAP analysis and improvement feedback (quantitative assessments in regards to main improvement areas).
  • Documentation & technical writing.
  • Provide the correct mine planning parameter and methodologies to the different entities participating in the Strategic, Life of Mine and Long Term Planning processes.
  • Ensure the key value/risk driver for the MOTF project and technologies are identified to then be assessed and finally controlled and optimised.
  • Work close to the Principal Advisor Mine of the Future Strategy and Studies in the development and maintenance of the MOTF road map and project pipeline.

To be successful for this role, you will hold a tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering along with a high level of experience working in a multi-pit and multi element open pit mining operation with strong exposure to mine planning, scheduling and financial analysis concepts. You will have experience with iron ore mining and the blending of raw materials as well as knowledge of fleet management (asset management). Advantageous to your application will be your exposure to autonomous mining technologies or technology within the mining industry. Don't miss out on this fantastic opportunity!
