Overview of Property
The Greens Creek Mine, located on Admiralty Island, 18 miles southwest of Juneau, is an underground polymetallic mine employing approximately 350 people. The mine is owned and operated by Hecla Mining Company, headquartered in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. Established in 1891, Hecla has a rich history as a distinguished and respected precious metals producer. Position Summary
To provide technical guidance and support for operators and contractors in the design and monitoring of underground openings, keeping leadership informed of risks and actions being taken to mitigate risk.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of Position
1. Ensures that design and execution are to accepted industry standards
a. Ensures that data is compiled and modeled to industry standards.
b. Ensures that design work is completed to professional standards and industry norms.
c. Provides invaluable support in terms of safety. Prepares risk assessments as needed.
Ensures adequate monitoring to protect people and property.
d. Makes recommendations for research and development initiatives.
2. Deliverables
a. Annually review the ground control management plan revising as necessary.
b. Provide training for supervision and miners as needed, at a minimum annually.
c. Perform rock bolt pull tests according to the ground control management plan.
d. Perform quality control tests on backfill such as capturing cylinders and performing UCS testing.
e. Review all backfill plans to ensure proper fill is being placed with regards to mining sequence.
f. Review all production and development plans to ensure correct support methods are being recommended.
g. Review all long-hole stoping plans and sequences to ensure appropriate methods of support are recommended.
h. Implement a geotechnical modeling program and update monthly.
i. Perform monthly audits of systems with action plans that are brought to closure to ensure that underground work is completed to professional standards. Ensure that action plans are clear, proactive, and constructively communicated to management.
j. Prepares monthly reports and other reports as needed by management ensuring information is accurate, pertinent, and usable.
k. Organizes external auditing and review as needed, without becoming dependent on external resources.
l. Perform quality control oversight on shotcrete program.
m. Makes recommendations for rehabilitation all openings.
3. Maintains departmental compliance with all local, state, federal (including MSHA and ATF) and company standards and guidelines for safety, health, environment, human resources and sustainable development while ensuring professional learning objectives of mine engineering staff are met through mentoring, coaching and execution of personal development plans;
demonstrates required behavioral skills including productive communication, cooperation, productivity, initiative, creativity, dependability.
4. Other duties as assigned
Other duties may be assigned. While performing the duties of this job, employees may be frequently required to stand, walk or sit for extended periods of time; use hand and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; regularly required to talk and hear.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision requirements for this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.
Employees may be occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, potentially hazardous wildlife; moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock. The noise level in most work environments is usually moderate. This position may
require occasional work on nights or weekends. Daily commute to work site by boat and bus is required.
Minimum Education Requirements (must be documented in application for consideration)
Bachelor of Science in Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, or a related field; equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Training/Special Skills
1. Exposure to rock mechanics software
2. Ability to perform technical audits, review complex engineering plans, evaluate geological data, and review engineering and economic fundamentals supporting operations and exploration.
3. Understanding of mining methodology, mining equipment, hydrology, and geotechnical engineering
4. Must be able to conduct 3D design modeling
Minimum Years/Type of Experience
Two (2) years of related work experience in and underground environment.
