SUMMARY
Supervises the Mine Geology department, overseeing production, underground exploration, and reserves/resource modeling while ensuring that safety, quality, and quantity goals are met through close interaction the operations and technical team members.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Plans and formulates geology programs, including underground production and exploration, geologic/metallurgical responses, ore reserves
Manages daily, weekly and monthly reporting and organizes staff according to needs
Coordinates activities concerned with geologic development, scheduling, and resolving geology grade and reserve issues
Evaluates specifications and geologic data releases
Prepares and controls expenditures annual budgets
Demonstrates required behavioral skills including productive communication, cooperation, productivity, accuracy, initiative, creativity, and dependability
Interprets data obtained by drilling to identify mineral deposits
Determines appropriate modeling and estimation techniques, develops 3D geological models and assists with the production and certification of periodic resource statements.
Liaises between the exploration, mining and processing teams, ensuring delivery of technical data
Mentors other team members to upgrade geological interpretation and modeling skills
Takes actions that optimize short and long term operational performance
Maintains compliance by having outside consultants review reserve/resource

While performing the duties of this job, employees may be frequently required to stand, walk or sit for extended periods of time; use hand and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; occasionally climb or balance on ladders or platforms; regularly required to talk and hear in person or on radio or telephone. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision requirements for this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Employees may be occasionally be exposed to outdoor work environments and outside weather conditions, wet and/or humid conditions; potentially hazardous wildlife; moving mechanical parts; and high places. The noise level in most work environments is usually moderate and occasionally loud. This position may require occasional work on nights or weekends. Daily commute to work site from Juneau by boat and bus required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
The position will manage subordinate geologists and non-exempt drilling technicians and/or contractors. Responsibilities include hiring & training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems to generate an empowering work environment
Education Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in geology, geological engineering, or related field with minimum 10 years related experience.
Experience/ Special Skills
Experience with drilling contract management, volume and modeling estimates, drill sampling, interpretation, and geological information required. Experience with Microsoft Suite, AutoCAD, 3-D modeling preferred; CAE (Datamine) experience a plus.
