Canada's premier diamond mine, Diavik Diamond Mines, Inc. is part of the Rio Tinto Group. Located 300 km northeast of Yellowknife in Canada's Northwest Territories, Diavik has been an open-pit mine since 2003, extracting diamonds from beneath the lake bed at Lac de Gras. Underground production began in 2010 and will continue to beyond 2020. Diavik is a John T. Ryan National Safety Trophy winner and one of Canada's Top 100 Employers for 2010. Reporting to the Supervisor, Underground, the Underground Miner 2 will work on a two (2) week on/ two (2) week off rotational basis at the mine site. The Miner 1 is responsible for performing underground mining activities to facilitate mining operations in accordance with all relevant legislation and DDMI standards of operation and health and safety. The Underground Miner 2 responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Ability to operate Longhole drill or Bolter.
- Capable of safely and efficiently performing all activities associated with development/production mining and/or underground construction, including but not limited to:
- Miscellaneous development and excavations, following prints and planning the work.
- Identifying and responding to workplace hazards.
- Ensuring your underground tasks are completed according to set schedules.
- Managing haulage ways and inspect for water and hangups in raises.
- Operating underground mobile equipment and heavy equipment.
- Performing drilling operations, including preparing face. (Ramping, drifting, cross-cutting, and slashing) for drilling, setting up drills, and dismantling drills.
- Setting up and operate mining machinery (mechanical miners) to shear rock and ore.
- Installing ground support/bolting.
- Operating mucking equipment, controlling dust and manage muck piles.
- Operating underground mobile equipment and heavy equipment such as haul truck, shuttle car.
- Operating explosive loaders and dismantle, move and store explosive loading equipment.
- Performing shotcreting duties when required.
- Operating mobile equipment to transport personnel, equipment and materials through mine.
- Recognizing loose and/or abnormal ground conditions or faulty ground support. Scaling loose rock from walls and roofs.
- Installing, maintaining and inspecting ventilation, hand and power tools, fire extinguishers, air, water and drain lines.
- Installing services, extending electrical and communication lines.
- Extending fill lines, build fill barricades, place fill.
- Selecting and transporting explosives, blasting agents and detonators.
- Checking and cleaning drilled blast holes.
- Loading and blasting lateral and vertical production and development drives and stopes.
- Conducting guarding and blasting.
- Performing basic maintenance on operating equipment (pre-start checks, refuelling, lube fill, washing down).
- Installation and assistance with preventative maintenance and overhaul repairs of primary underground installation.
Above all, the successful candidate will be one whose # 1 priority is safety in the work place. The incumbent will have:
- Completion of underground core training aligned with National Occupational Standards for Underground Mining (MiHR) is considered an asset.
