Geologist II or Project Geologist Sudbury, Ontario, Canada
KGHM International Ltd. is a wholly owned subsidiary of KGHM Polska Miedz S.A., focused on growth in copper and other metals. We operate mines in Canada, the USA and Chile and are currently constructing the Sierra Gorda copper-molybdenum project in Chile and actively progressing the Victoria project, our newest discovery in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada.
We are looking for a dynamic Geologist II or Project Geologist for our Exploration Team in Sudbury, Ontario. Specific title and compensation will be reflected by qualifications of successful candidate.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Shows functional capability in all phases related to the field execution of drilling programs.
2. Conducts independent geological mapping
3. Collects, compiles, evaluates and interprets all project geological, geophysical and geochemical data. Prepares short summary reports for the Senior Geologist on a weekly and monthly basis. May be asked to present data to senior management and joint venture partners in a highly professional manner.
4. Has developed the skills required to use and complete basic modeling tasks in 3D geological and GIS software.
5. Conducts QA/QC reviews of data.
6. Completes logging of drill core and geochemical sampling (from drill core and field) and analysis of results with minor assistance from the (Senior) Project Geologist.
7. Integrates geological data into existing databases using various software programs,
8. Trains and motivates staff to achieve excellence and to operate in a safe manner (dependent on level of candidate).
9. May supervise exploration team(s) comprised of junior and student geologists, geo-scientific technologists and technicians as well as outside contractors.
10. Meets realistic deadlines and ensures the completion of the designated exploration program within budgeted guidelines and specified timeframes.
11. Ensures high quality performance and confidentiality of subordinates’ and contractors’ work by providing suitable guidance and supervision.
12. External liaison with on-site contractors and suppliers, property owners and their agents, exploration personnel from joint venture partners and other companies, and local government personnel.
13. May be accountable for annual operating budgets of up to $1,000,000.
14. Executes mineral exploration programs to explore, locate and define potentially economic mineral deposits within an assigned area, within prescribed timeframes and budgets (dependent on level of candidate).
15. Keeps up to date with respect to new geological concepts and the development and use of innovative technology to optimize the effectiveness and efficiency of exploration programs and keep up to date with provincial regulations regarding staking, assessment, etc.
16. Takes responsibility for aspects of occupational health and safety, and environmental matters, over which the individual has control, including adherence to all requirements applicable to KGHM International.
17. Such other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
- 2-5 years of geology experience.
- University degree (B.Sc or M.Sc) in Geology.
- Must have P.Geo or be P.Geo eligible.
- Excellent communication skills, planning, problem-solving and organizational skills.
- Ability to work in a team environment with minimal supervision.
- Can work responsibly; independently.
- Must possess good data compilation skills.
- Must have the ability to develop and manage projects.
- Intermediate level knowledge of Microsoft Office and geology-specific software programs.
- Basic to intermediate computer skills in Datamine and 3D GIS software.
- Must be willing and able to travel for extended periods and/or accept re-location. Work may include camp based field work.
