Position Purpose:
 
The Specialist IT Disaster Recovery will ensure that Peabody Energy’s data, data systems, applications and networks are recoverable in the event of a disaster.  In order to recover the Technology capabilities that Peabody Energy relies on heavily in a timely manner, the correct recovery solutions and processes need to be designed, documented, implemented and routinely tested.  Peabody mining operations have become heavily reliant on technology to operate the mine sites and with the addition of the Operations Technology Center (OTC) program, this reliance will significantly increase.  The Specialist IT Disaster Recovery will work collaboratively with the business and IT personnel to design and implement a successful recovery plan that delivers the technology capabilities needed to return the company to normal operations quickly after a disaster.

Principal Accountabilities:

The primary goal of this position is to work with the business and Information Technology groups to design, implement and test a disaster recovery plan/program that minimizes downtime in the event of a disaster. This position is accountable for all aspects of the disaster recovery program and will work collaboratively with the IT Architecture, engineering and implementation groups to develop the recovery solution that meets the growing needs of the business. The Specialist IT Disaster Recovery is responsible for ensuring that, in the event of a disaster, the Peabody employee and client base experiences minimal disruption.

This position will:


  • Serve as the owner of the BC/DR program delivering cost effective recovery solutions. 
  • Responsible for coordinating and execution of regular audits and tests of the BC/DR plans. 
  • Design and implement disaster recovery and business continuity procedures for re-establishing servers, databases, networks, systems and applications in the event of a disruption/disaster. 
  • Perform and analyze disaster simulations for the prompt restoration of services. 
  • Mature the BC/DR practices at Peabody relating to the Information Technology areas 
  • Define and implement a Business Impact Analysis (BIA) rating and assessment methodology and apply it to all of the technology applications and systems. 
  • Work closely with key stakeholders in the business to identify and document their recovery requirements. 
  • Work collaboratively with the information technology groups to develop the design and implement the needed hardware and software solutions that quickly deliver the required business capabilities in the event of a disaster. 
  • Develop specific disaster recovery test criteria, methods and procedures. 
  • Responsible for scheduling, coordinating and reviewing all data recovery simulations to assure that the existing plan will result in minimal or no business interruption. 
  • Coordinate and manage the activities of various groups with recovery related vendors (alternate site, off-site storage and other service providers) in the event of an actual declared disaster. 
  • Perform periodic reviews with third party vendors on procedures and contracted services. Coordinate with vendors any changes needed to existing hardware and software to bring up the technology capabilities to the disaster recovery standards that have established. 
  • Business Continuity: Analyze business needs and work with the various technology groups to develop strategies to improve business continuity. Maintain up-to-date business continuity risk related manuals and standards and develop ones where they do not exist. 
  • Assess the Business Continuity implications of proposed technological or organizational changes, and coordinating any revisions to existing Business Continuity plans or procedures necessitated by such changes.

Job Requirements:


  • BA/BS in Computer Science, related technical discipline, or equivalent experience. 
  • 5-10 years of experience developing, implementing and testing BC/DR plans and has effectively developed a program relating to these capabilities delivering long term operational success 
  • Proven ability and track record developing and driving standards that align to industry best practices relating to business continuity and disaster recovery 
  • Serve as the conduit between the business and the IT organization ensuring that the technology recovery plan delivers the needed capabilities to the business in a timely manner in the event of a disaster. 
  • Knowledge of technology solutions that enable reliable and timely recovery of computer systems, networks and applications including: 


    • Disk replication technologies  

    • Virtual tape  

    • High availability solutions  

    • Automated recovery solutions  
  • Strong written, verbal and presentation skills are required. 
  • Able to develop a strong business case/value proposition relating to BC/DR solutions that return the business quickly to normal operations. 
  • Must demonstrate experience in the techniques used to build highly scalable, economically feasible recovery solutions and processes. 
  • Innovative thinker with strong analysis, design and communication skills. 
  • Travel as necessary.
