Job Description: AREVA is seeking a Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer for our Solar location in Mountain View, CA. Responsibilities and duties include:
- Design for sensitivity to cost, serviceability, manufacturability, and reliability
- Document opto-mechanical requirements based on system functional requirements
- Hold reviews at various stages of design
- Complete necessary analyses, tolerance studies, and drawings
- Build initial assemblies for lab and outdoor testing
- Develop and implement test plans for new designs
- Create documentation, and release products into manufacturing
- Manage suppliers for new designs. Troubleshoot manufactured parts.
- Subsystem integration and test
- Data reduction for design verification and FMEA.
- Responsible for the specification and procurement of optical components and supporting opto-mechanical systems.
- Build, align, test, and calibrate optical systems.
- Interact with the supporting engineering disciplines to ensure that the optical system's performance is maintained during the development of the mechanical & thermal aspects of the product.
- Documentation of the design, build procedures & test results.
- Conceptual design studies of novel optical systems
- Troubleshoot manufacturing and test failures.
- Prepare budget and schedule estimates and meet targets.
Typical projects:
- Secondary optics in linear CSP systems.
- Heliostat fields.
- Flux measurement systems.
- Concentrated photovoltaic systems.
All candidates must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for this opportunity. Candidates who exceed minimum qualifications may be considered for a higher level position.
- B.S in physics or optics with 10, M.S. in Optical engineering with 5, or Ph. D. in physics with 3 years of relevant industry experience
- Three years' experience with LightTools or equivalent illumination modeling program.
- Three years' experience with Zemax or equivalent optical design program.
- Three years' experience with SolidWorks.
- Hands-on experience with alignment and integration of optical systems.
- Hands-on experience with optical metrology.
- Geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (ASME Y14.5 preferred).
- Track record of optics designs launched into the marketplace or civil space programs.
- In depth knowledge of optical engineering principles.

- Hands-on experience with radiometry
- Vibration analysis and testing
- Experience with alignment tools - autocollimators and theodolites
- Knowledge of large optical fabrication (e.g. sheet metal) and test methods
- Utilizing structured engineering process from requirement definition through design, development, and testing.
- Mechanical analysis background including tolerancing, thermal, structural (modal, stress, deflection
- Mechanical drawing preparation and reading
- Experience with ISO 10110 optical drawings.
