Job description:

Overview:

The Chief Geologist is responsible for providing comprehensive and strategic geological support to the New Mines Development team as it proceeds with the process of reviewing & validating resources identified by the exploration team and ensure that it is in compliance with the International Standard requirement such as JORC. He will be required to identify opportunities to add to value of any mining project through extending the resource base or specifically targeting resource packages for optimal mining.

Responsibilities:
 

Establish and grow the geological section of NMD

  • Staff the department as required by project workload with adequate qualified staff to conduct the work and supervise all external consultants and contractors.
  • Ensure all staff are adequately trained and experienced to fulfil their functions.
  • Utalise appropriate technologies to correctly asses the NMD projects and ensure their correct appraisal.
  • Establish credibility of the department.

Provide Strategic input into development of mining plans

  • Assess current status of geological information and resource modelling relative to NMD projects to provide strategic input into the feasibility studies of such projects.
  • Identify additional work requirements required to optimally examine and develop such projects.
  • Consider variations to geological model inputs into mine plans in order to optimally develop the projects 

Indentifies exploration targets relative to mine development

  • Identifies and prioritises short and medium term exploration needs for the development of NMD projects.
  • Taking cognisance of current information and the project priorities of the company and NMD motivates exploration priorities relative to the needs of NMD in order to best examine and develop the project pipeline.

Supervises field activities related to NMD projects

  • In collaboration with Exploration department supervises the activities of field geologists and drilling contractors conducting short and medium term exploration activities relative to development of NMD projects / project areas. 

Supervises Resource modelling activities

  • In collaboration with Exploration Technical Services supervises the modelling of the various deposits being considered by NMD and variations to such models, pit optimisation and mine plans as may be considered as a consequence of various production scenarios.
  • Supervises the work of external consultants in this regard.

Custodian of NMD QA/QC

  • As the responsible person for NMD geological inputs he is responsible for taking ownership of the resources from exploration and developing them as required to further a project’s viability.
  • Required to ensure all geological work on the projects is conducted according to appropriate quality management standards and that all QA/QC procedures are correctly followed and applied so resources can be correctly converted to reserves.

Data Base Management

  • Responsible for ensuring the collation and storage of all geological, modelling and resource data (can be copies) relative to NMD.
  • Responsible to ensure all correct geological data is used in assessment of NMD projects and provided to consultants as required.   

External Consultant / Contract Services Management

  • Initiate, implement and coordinate specialised services and work packages with external consultants / contractors.
  • Supervise and asses the work of external consultants and contractors.

Supports needs of NMD Sections

  • Provides the necessary work inputs to support other sections of NMD such as hydro-geological, geotechnical, environmental, mine planning and layouts etc.

Supports Mine Development

  • Provides required geological support to NMD team to develop mining operations.

Reporting

  • Submit regular reports as required.
  • Drafting, auditing technical reports both internal and from consultants.

Supervision

  • Supervises the work of subordinates, consultants and contractors as required in order to assure a good quality of work.
  • Ensure work is conducted and completed according to time constraints.

HSE

  • Strictly adheres to and enforces the Company’s Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) programs, policies and procedures.
  • Conducts regular HSE meetings within own area of responsibility.
  • Oversees the monitoring and auditing activities, providing guidance and instruction to subordinates.
  • Authorizes measures to alleviate unsafe work practices
  • Investigates and provides recommendations or instigates actions to incidents.
  • Ensure employees and contractors adhere to companies HSE regulations
  • Ensure adequate HSE training is conducted.
Qualifications:

Bachelors Degree in Geology / Economic Geology or Engineering Geology.

Preferably a Masters or PhD in geological field. 15 plus years experience.

  • Experience in identifying the feasibility of and development of mining projects.
  • Fluent in English

Knowledge of GIS, resource modelling and mining software packages
