Our Client:
Our client is a privately-held oil sands company that has assembled a strong management team bringing together individuals with extensive experience in oil sands development in the Athabasca region with the resources of one of the largest energy companies in the world and having extensive field experience in operational methods and SAGD processes. The company’s first Commercial Project is expected to produce 150,000 bpd bitumen with an initial phase of 35,000 bpd projected for 2014 start-up. Concurrently, the company is also working on a separate commercial project targeted for 2015 startup.
As a 'start-up' the company is looking for smart, innovative, and energetic individuals who are eager to roll up their sleeves and contribute to their small and rapidly growing team as they all work together to define their processes, systems, and technologies and bring new ideas to life. With the size and scale of their project, and multiple phases being planned to immediately follow the completion of Phase 1 in 2014, there will be numerous opportunities to learn and grow together as they complete subsequent phases.
Reporting Structure:
The position will report to the Field Operations Manager.
Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
The Technical Superintendent is responsible for the leadership and supervision of the site Technical Team. The team will consist of staff that provides plant and field engineering, DCS support, inspection, critical information support and plant / field surveillance and support.
This position will initially be based out of Calgary and will transition to Ft. McMurray, prior to start up of the Plant.
 Technical Integrity Management: Overall technical integrity management, including ensuring the appropriate safeguarding of all Facility equipment.
 Capital Budget: Managing the Facility Capital Projects Budget.
 Health/Safety: Ensuring facility compliance to ABSA and EUB standards. Providing leadership in engineered safety, safeguarding and risk assessment/risk management.
 Project Coordination & Head Office Interfaces: Ensuring effective site involvement and interface for all projects (site or Development driven) being executed.
 Change Management: Sponsor of site Management of Change process. Ensuring that all facility changes are executed via the MOC process, that adequate technical review is conducted and that the MOC process is adequately audited.
 Maintenance Management Process: Participating key member of the Maintenance, Operations, Engineering team involved in the needs assessment, risk ranking and prioritization of corrective, project and T/A work orders via the Maintenance Management System.
 Staff: Leadership and supervision of the Technical Team. Ensures proper prioritization and resourcing for technical workload. Responsible for staff planning, development plans, performance contracts and appraisals. Provides coaching and mentoring to the Technical Team.
 Initially, the Technical Superintendent will be based in Calgary and involved in getting a variety of programs in place.
 This role is considered a working team leader such that the position is expected to contribute to achieving the technical workload.
Skills/Qualifications:
 P.Eng. designation with APEGGA.
 Operations engineering background with 10 years experience, preference for heavy oil, SAGD processing experience.
 High level of personal energy and drive to deal with issues and overcome barriers.
 HSSD-MS knowledge and experience with HEMP strongly desired.
 Ability to manage multiple issues / projects concurrently, effectively prioritize work for self and team across the entire asset area and drive for closure.
 Strong oral and written communication skills.
 Ability to lead and get work done through self and others; results orientated and effective delegator.
 Strong organizational skills.
 Previous supervisory experience preferred, but not mandatory.
