The Lucky Friday Mine is a deep underground silver, lead, and zinc mine located one mile east of the town of Mullan in the Coeur d’Alene Mining District in northern Idaho. The Lucky Friday has been owned and operated by Hecla Mining Company, headquartered in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, since 1958. Established in 1891 in one of the world’s most prolific silver-producing districts, northern Idaho’s Silver Valley, Hecla Mining Company’s rich history of mining has distinguished it as a respected precious metals producer. Hecla is the oldest U.S.-based precious metals mining company in North America and the largest producer of silver in the U.S. Headquartered in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, with a sister office in Vancouver, B.C., our international, publicly traded company is 120 years old.
SUMMARY
Provides oversight to the mine engineering and geology departments of an underground mine to develop, maintain and continuously improve upon safety, health, environmental, operational and financial performance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Promotes safe and environmentally compliant work activities at all times.
Supervises engineering and geology department heads in the technical aspects of an underground mining operation utilizing ramp access, cut and fill mining methods with ongoing underground and surface exploration projects while liaising with operations group to ensure execution of mine plans and schedules. Provides strategic direction for the engineering and geology departments.
Ensures technical deliverables to customers, including mine engineering functions (i.e. dewatering, ventilation, ground control, survey, short-medium-long term planning, etc.) and geology functions (i.e. ore body identification-interpretation-definition, drilling program administration, production geology support, etc.) services are met in a timely manner, through subordinate department heads.
Produces daily, weekly and monthly technical reports that focus on key performance indicators to monitor progress and achievement of business objectives.
Responsible for implementing special projects and studies as required, such as ventilation studies, raise bore programs, underground communications, etc., using internal and external resources. Responsible for ensuring special projects and studies are completed within established timelines.
Maintains departmental compliance with all local, state, federal and company standards and guidelines for safety, health, environment and sustainable development while ensuring professional learning objectives of mine engineering and geology staff are met through mentoring, coaching and execution of personal development plans.
Lead and develop the strategic direction of the Lucky Friday Mine’s reserve and resource development. Proactively work with other departments and corporate to ensure that business plans are consistent with the latest mine plans.
Work with the Lucky Friday General Manager to establish the annual budget for the Technical Services group. Review budget monthly to ensure the department is operating within budget and be able to explain variances to the budget.
Directly supervises the Chief Geologist and Chief Mine Engineer, and others who may be assigned. Responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the employees of the Geology and Mine Engineering teams through the Chief Geologist and Chief Mine Engineer. Carries out supervisory duties in accordance with company policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include hiring & training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems to generate an empowering work environment.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; regularly required to talk and hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, underground work locations, risk of electrical shock, explosives, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or geology or a related field and a minimum of 5 years related experience and/or training, 3 of which must be in a leadership or management role; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite of Products, including Project.
Proficient with AutoCad.
Familiarity with software used in Geology, Mining, and Engineering.
Demonstrated knowledge of the concepts, practices, and procedures of mining engineering specialization gained through experience and application.
