UNDERGROUND MINE SUPERVISOR northern Idaho, USA
The Lucky Friday Mine is a deep underground silver, lead, and zinc mine located one mile east of the town of Mullan in the Coeur d’Alene Mining District in northern Idaho. The Lucky Friday has been owned and operated by Hecla Mining Company, headquartered in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, since 1958. Established in 1891 in one of the world’s most prolific silver-producing districts, northern Idaho’s Silver Valley, Hecla Mining Company’s rich history of mining has distinguished it as a respected precious metals producer. Hecla is the oldest U.S.-based precious metals mining company in North America and the largest producer of silver in the U.S. Headquartered in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, with a sister office in Vancouver, B.C., our international, publicly traded company is 120 years old.
SUMMARY
As a member of the first line supervision team, the Underground Mine Supervisor supervises workers engaged in underground mine production and development.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Promotes safe and environmentally compliant work activities at all times.
Studies production and development schedules and estimates worker hour requirements for safe completion of job assignments; organizes resources material required to meet fill goals.
Interprets specifications, mine plans, and production reports to workers, and assigns duties; establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production and development schedules; maintains time and production records.
Examines work areas to determine if specifications are met; recommends measures to improve safety, production methods, equipment performance, and quality of muck; suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase effectiveness of work crews.
Interprets company policies to workers and enforces safety and environmental regulations; analyzes and resolves work problems, or assists workers in solving work problems, per the grievance procedure as detailed in the bargaining agreement; initiates or suggests plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.
Confers with other supervisors, geologists and engineers to coordinate activities of crew. Performs activities of workers supervised, per the bargaining agreement, in the case of an emergency, when necessary to instruct employees in their duties, for minor work that is unreasonable to assign to a bargaining unit employee, or to provide training for salaried personnel.
Directly supervises 15 to 20 employees in an underground production crew. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies, applicable laws, and the bargaining agreement. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 125 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, underground work locations, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, explosives, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. May be required to work nights, weekends, and rotating shifts.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or equivalent, and; 5-10 years mining experience in narrow vein mining, or a combination of equivalent education and experience.
