Kennecott Utah Copper, LLC is currently looking for a Superintendent of Geological Services for their North Rim Skarn (NRS) team located in Salt Lake City, Utah. NRS is in essence the underground expansion project for Kennecott Utah Copper, one of the largest and oldest copper mines in the world, and a flagship mine for Rio Tinto. NRS will involve the construction of a decline, the refurbishing of a shaft, underground drilling, and other high risk activities. Most of the work will be contracted out and therefore the role will involve providing support in engaging contractors, influencing them, and managing them to achieve outstanding results. NRS is one of several projects managed by Kennecott Utah Copper. Geological modeling 30%
- With input from other geology staff, sole detailed analysis of different geological parameters to be plotted on sections in order to make a further 3D interpretation of the geology and evolution of the deposit and mineralization.
- This will be accomplished by using current data and sampling to develop the underground workings and from there launch further exploration from underground to obtain detailed geological logging to understand the geology and gain ore body knowledge key to the design of the tunnel/shafts to build the mine.
Exploration 30%
- Leadership in carrying out deposit-scale exploration on the skarn from underground access to define the deposit and resulting mine plan.
- Will develop the plot mapping for drilling and review results with the team and project leadership.
Geotechnical: 30%
- Assist in development and maintenance of the Ground Control Management (GCMP) plan for NRS construction and operational activities.
- Manage, design and implementation of a geotechnical data collection program to ensure that sufficient data is collected for the PFS study.
- Manage technical analysis related to underground support, constructability, excavation, design, & sequencing.
Special Project Generation and Oversight 10%
- Manage with project director, study manager and other members of the KUC geological team as well as generate special projects designed to evaluate mineral zoning, timing and genetic relationships of alteration and mineralization, metallurgical modeling to increase ore body knowledge and improve interpretation of the geology.
- Leadership responsibility to ensure projects are seen through to completion on time.
Other geologic duties performed as needed.
College/University Education:
- BS or MS degree in Geology or a closely related field required.
- Minimum of ten years experience in skarn deposits with knowledge of skarn/porphyry deposits.
Other Qualifications:
- Background in cross sectional interpretation and 3-D modeling.
- Proficiency in MineSight and acQuire with experience in Vulcan is preferred.
- Practical knowledge in mineral resource assessment and modeling.
