Kennecott Utah Copper (KUC, LLC), a world-class mining and mineral processing company, in Salt Lake City, Utah is searching for a Principal Engineer - Projects to manage a single large-sized or a group of moderately sized projects and to provide engineering support to the various operating plants. ThePrincipal Engineer - Projects position is to supervise Senior Project Engineers and/or Project Engineers to assure compliance with policies and standards, assign work, review work products, and monitor staff and project performance. Accountabilities:
- Manage a group of projects and multiple project leaders and/or larger and more complex projects to meet objectives
- Provide leadership in managing, shaping, and directing area of responsibility including collaboration and team approaches to enhance project execution
- Administrative supervision of subordinate staff including development and assessment, training, mentoring and coaching, performance management, and compliance with policies and standards
- Regularly interface with the project sponsors and senior management at assigned plants
- Ensure appropriate corrective actions are taken where necessary for project quality, safety, cost, schedule, and staff performance.
- Supervise contract project staff and contractors to ensure understanding and compliance with KUCC standards and to ensure project cost, schedule, quality, and safety objectives are met
- Resolve scope definition, quality, design and project execution problems that may arise in their own or supervised projects by using sound engineering and management principles and by consulting with engineering firms and plant personnel
- Responsible for the project budget for all projects in an assigned area and must work with project leaders resolve any budget shortfalls
- Take corrective action to reduce the project cost or preparing justification documents to be presented to management for increasing the budget
- Ensure scheduling conflicts or project delays are promptly resolved by working with the project leader to define appropriate mitigation action and by closely working with the appropriate plant manager
Qualifications:
- B.S Degree Mechanical/Civil/Electrical/Metallurgical, or Process Engineering or equivalent relevant experience
- Over 10 years of progressively responsible experience including strong supervisory experience and formal project management training and experience
- Proficient in SAP
- Basic knowledge of project management principles with underlying objective of obtaining PMP certification
- Strong leadership, people management, and negotiation skills with previous supervisory experience
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and experience with computer system applications including MS Word, Excel, MS Project and/or similar project management software
