Purpose:
- Serve as the regional functional leader for Project Engineering affairs centering on engineering design standards and procedures, engineering design basis, project scope of work (scope of facilities and scope of services), engineering quality control and quality assurance, engineering execution and related engineering affairs for major capital projects in the region.
- Provides guidance, coordination and management of the Owner’s Project Teams engineering members:
- Provides input to project engineering team to ensure that EPC/CM contractor develops, monitors and maintains a quality plan and change management plan for engineering aspects of the project.
- Provide guidance to project engineering team to facilitate the coordination of activities between Owner’s project engineering team and EPC/CM contractor’s engineering team, and the management of their activities and deliverables.
- Provide guidance to project engineering team to manage the process of engineering deliverables turnover, systems turnover, pre-commissioning, process commissioning, performance testing, mechanical completion, practical completion, and final completion per contract requirements and company expectations.
- Align with Group Executive – Project Engineering and Regional Projects Director for developing project engineering strategies and performance metrics for major and mega-projects and support Corporate Project Engineering’s SME’s in development of EPC/CM contracts (Stage 3 Study Contracts and Stage 4/5 EPC/M Contracts).
- Liaison with D&D Project Commercial and Regional Commercial Director for project scope development to major and mega projects.
- Liaison between D&D Project Engineering, D&D Project Commercial and Newmont Supply Chain Management for SCM support to major and mega-projects.
- Manage and provide functional leadership to project engineering managers assigned to capital projects including recruiting, hiring and talent management.
- Serve a the regional lead for Project Engineering affairs regarding Newmont’s Capital Effectiveness Program (CEP) and Business Readiness Program.
- As functional leader, maintain engineering design standards, procedures and policies for regional projects as they pertain to project engineering affairs and communicate those standards, procedures and policies to Project Engineering’s SMEs.
Regional responsibility in the following activities:
- Align with the Group Executive – Project Engineering and the Regional Projects Director for strategic project planning, development and implementation.
- Support Project Commercial’s and Project Engineering’s corporate SMEs in developing prime contracts for major capital projects (Stage 3 Study Agreements & Stage 4 & 5 EPC/M Agreements).
- Provide guidance to Project’s project engineering team to plan and implement other engineering contracts for projects that are high risk, large dollar packages (i.e. earthworks, geotechnical, building construction, technical services etc.) and general oversight of all contracts.
- Implement and support Capital Effectiveness (Stage-Gate) activities for Business & Project Services; mainly engineering design and management for development of capital projects including development of Project Execution Plans.
- Participate in the development of global engineering standards and processes as they relate to the Business & Project Services group.
- Liaison with Project Commercial with respect to development of Stage 3 contracting activities including:
- Development of the Stage 3 contract including scope of services and commercial basis;
- Participate in the evaluation and selection of a Stage 3 Study Contractor, and
- Participate in negotiations and award of Stage 3 Study Agreements.
- In conjunction with Project Commercial, participate in the planning, evaluation, development, negotiation and contracting processes for capital programs including Project Execution Plan (Stage 4 & 5) development for capital projects as it relates to Project Engineering.
- Provide on-going design engineering and project engineering management support to projects during construction (Stages 4 & 5) including health checks and site audits.
- Support the Strategic Relationship Agreements with Newmont’s EPC/EPCM alliance partners Fluor, Lycopodium, Bechtel etc.
The above duties and responsibilities are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all-inclusive.
The position is located in the region specified; some travel to the Newmont Denver headquarters and other domestic and international Capital Project sites is required.
- Bachelor’s degree BA/BS in Business Management, Engineering or Construction Management required.
- A minimum of 20 years experience in extensive planning and execution of capital projects centering on project engineering design and construction.
- Experience and a high level of understanding of Engineering & Construction (E&C) industry practices in engineering design and execution.
- Broad based experience in equipment design, project design and project execution.
- Preference for having experience in the mining and minerals industry including experience in mining capital equipment.
- A preference for having experience with major construction projects with site experience in the U.S. and developing countries.
- Experience in the development of major capital project standards and procedures. (i.e. Stage Gate, Capital Effectiveness Program).
- Strong oral and written communication skills required.
- Interpersonal skills and ability to work at all organizational levels and departments required.
