We are looking for a Health & Safety Superintendent to join our North East British Columbia, Health and Safety team in Chetwynd, BC. Reporting directly to the General Manager / Mine Manager and a matrix report to the Vice President, Health and Safety - Canadian Operations, you will be responsible for developing, implementing, leading and managing health and safety programs for the mine. You will also promote Walter Energy’s belief that all injuries are preventable and work toward reducing occupational health and safety related illnesses and injuries, and improve the wellbeing of employees at the mine sites. Moreover, you will also be directly responsible for the development and implementation of the North East British Columbia (NEBC) Health and Safety three year strategy and multi-year business plans.
This role will be focused on one of the mining operations (NEBC) and scope will include management of site health and safety team as well as participate as an active member of NEBC Health and Safety Leadership Team.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities include:
· Maintaining and applying knowledge of Canadian and BC rules and regulations for health and safety as well as company policies and programs to manage, develop and implement a comprehensive health and safety management system and programs to ensure compliance with these requirements at the mine
· Participating as an active team member on the site leadership team and move the mine forward towards developing a proactive safety culture through influence, leadership, mentoring and communication
· Building, managing and leading an effective, high-performance health and safety team that is respected at the site while concurrently working with Joint Health and Safety Committee
· Assisting employees in achieving short and long term career objectives through good coaching, mentoring and career development
· Managing safety and loss control budgets to facilitate continuous improvement and cost effective activities and solutions
· Developing site and NEBC-level health and safety goals: monitoring, tracking and presenting performance data while making interventions as needed to meet the goals and objectives to improve performance
· Developing and conducting education and training programs for mine
· Developing tools for supervisors and employees to improve performance and reduce health and safety incidents
· Managing the site security and emergency preparedness & response programs
Qualifications
The successful incumbent will act as a good ambassador for the company and demonstrate proven ability to build strong working relationships with management and employees at all levels of the organization, community stakeholders, external consultants, contractors, government agencies and other related third parties. You hold a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Health & Safety or equivalent experience with increasing levels of responsibility. Specifically, you bring 5 or more years of experience in HSE management, preferably in the mining industry, and demonstrable experience of monitoring occupational health exposures. Your thorough knowledge of governmental HSE codes & acts, regulatory and voluntary requirements, policies and practices as applicable to the mining industry will help you to identify and resolve day-to-day technical and operational safety problems. Supported by a positive attitude and excellent people management, influential, interpersonal and communication skills, you are a visible team player that leads by example. Moreover, you demonstrate the ability to mentor, develop and motivate site personnel to promote good practices and maintain high standards of contact to a diverse workforce. You possess general computer experience with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Internet Explorer and experience using specific applications related to health and safety.
