Diavik Diamond Mines (DDMI) owns Rio Tinto's interest in and manages the unincorporated Diavik diamonds joint venture in the Northwest Territories of Canada. Mining takes place in the lake bed at Lac de Gras with water held back by a dike made of rock fill. With approximately 800 employees, Diavik is instrumental in making Canada the world's third largest diamond producer by value. Diavik has won awards for its sensitive management of environmental and community issues. Reporting to the Supervisor, Underground Mobile, the Underground Mobile Lead Hand, will work a two (2) week on / two (2) week off rotational basis at the Lac de Gras mine site. The incumbent will lead, coach and mentor a team consisting of trades people and contractors while performing day to day responsibilities. This role would be to support the underground mobile supervisor and also provide relief when the supervisor is on holidays or away. They must also communicate effectively with the crews and production personnel at the site. The Underground Mobile Lead Hand responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Shop and Storage areas:
- Ensure that the assigned Maintenance areas (surface shop, 9290, 9060) are kept neat and tidy and that all tools are properly maintained and stored.
- Ensure that all lifting equipment is in compliance with the C6 standard.
- Trades persons:
- Coordinate the trades people to ensure that jobs are done safely and efficiently, within the time frame allotted for the job.
- Coordinate the trades people to ensure that they maintain a good house keeping standard within there designated areas of work.
- Work with and mentor the crews so that they can learn and safety complete the tasks required.
- Crew:
- Engage the crew in daily tool box meetings to identify safety hazards and method on how to control the hazards.
- Keep the crew informed of the progress made on the weekly maintenance schedule and identify upcoming jobs that will affect the operation of the plant.
- Using the computerized maintenance management system as provided.
- Completion of work orders for planned and unplanned daily maintenance tasks.
- Comply with and promote the health, safety and environment improvement action plan and all Diavik and Rio Tinto Standards by:
- Meeting your personal safety plan commitments.
- Thoroughly investigating all safety incidents and accidents and creating a robust action plan to prevent any further incidents of this type.
- Working to achieve or exceed the site and departmental safety goals.
- Foster and develop a safety culture within the assigned area.
- Use a safe working attitude when performing tasks.
- Complete a JHA prior to performing tasks.
- Identify safety concerns to the crew and engage the crew on brain storming on how to manage these risks.
- Coach crew members on safety habits and how to identify potential job hazards. and manage these hazards.
- Adhere to all safety standards and policies.
- Participate in the daily PASS meetings.
- Liaise with the production and maintenance planning:
- To coordinate both planned and break down equipment maintenance to optimize plant availability.
- To support the operations supervisor in achieving the weekly planned maintenance schedule.
- To support the maintenance planner in developing an achievable and effective. work plan for both weekly maintenance and shut down maintenance.
- Liaise with other departments outside of the assigned area.
- Communicate effectively with cross shift:
- Safety Concerns.
- Maintenance strategy.
- Special Projects.
- Complete cross shift report both daily and two week shift end report.
- Obtain the necessary materials from the warehouse using a computerized requisition system.
- Assist the superintendent to Maintain a balanced budget by monitoring consumables and requisition purchases.
- Develop and maintain maintenance procedures, review them at least quarterly and make revisions to maximize trades efficiency and safety.
- Coach and mentor Lead hands as part of the succession plan to develop them into front line supervisors.
- Perform other tasks as assigned from time to time.
The successful candidate will be one whose #1 priority is safety in the work place. The incumbent will have:
- Certification as a Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic.
- Northwest Territories Mine Supervisor Certificate - Level 2.
- Experience with underground equipment operation.
- Five or more years of related experience is preferred.
