What You'll DoAt Rio Tinto, Process Engineers plan, design and operate mining processes in both surface and underground operations of metals and minerals. In addition, you will:

- Apply specialist skills and experience to understand and predict the relevant attributes of the deposit and surroundings.
- Provide expert advice to the operation on opportunities to improve recovery and concentrate quality.
- Work closely with the mine geologists and metallurgical engineers to improve definition of ore domains based on processing characteristics and contribute to the development of models that better predict concentrator performance on future ores.
- Manage operation of the MLA to support concentrator production and resource development.
- Provide timely analysis, interpretation and reporting of mineralogical data.
- Monitor and champion improvement in quality of sample collection, preparation and analysis.
- Engage with customers to ensure operations and project needs are met.
- Continuously evaluate and stay informed of new technologies.
- Provide technical support for the plant through assessing performance of key value drivers (throughput, recovery and quality).
- Apply process knowledge & experience to understand, predict and improve process behaviors.
- Review process control system(s) to identify improvement opportunities.
- Use of plant metallurgical technical systems and models as part of analytical process. (Includes metallurgical accounting, data historian, delay accounting, expert control system etc).
- Initiation & application of root cause analysis techniques to help understand performance gaps and issues leading to identification and implementation of solutions.
- Develop and manage business improvement projects (define, plan, implement & verify).
- Develop and manage metallurgical test work design programs in laboratory & plant.
- Develop and implement innovative process improvements, work practices and equipment changes to improve plant throughput, energy consumption, water use, reagent usage, recovery, and quality and reduce costs.
- Develop and maintain control systems for the Refinery processes, including PLC programming, DCS systems, HMI graphics, and data historian.
- Work with operations and maintenance to improve planning, scheduling and execution of work orders and maintenance shutdowns.
- Assist with engineering projects and installation and commissioning of new equipment.
- Assist in the commissioning of all new plant facilities and insure conformity to specification.
- Provide plant trouble-shooting support.
- Review and prepare Controls standards.
- Review production plans and forecasts and support reporting systems.
- Mentoring of graduate engineers & interns.
- Develop strong collaborative relationships with stakeholders so that resources are aligned to meet production and quality targets & communicate clearly & effectively technical information to non-technical background staff.
- Continuously evaluate and keep abreast of new technologies and best practices.
- Identify performance gaps and opportunities and develop prioritized projects to maximize value.
- Develop and manage capital projects.
- Coordinate identification, execution, analysis and reporting of metallurgical test-work programs.
- Set production plans and forecasts and manage reporting systems.
- Provide supervision and development of your team to improve overall skills and competencies.
What it Takes
- BS Degree in Metallurgical, Mineralogy, Chemical, Production and Mineral Process Engineering or related field with additional education preferred.
- A minimum of 3 years of metals or mineral processing experience in mining/metals or chemical industry with knowledge of SAG, Ball Mill grind circuits and flotation & prior supervisory experience desired. Operations / Process engineering background desired.
- Knowledge of mineral processing unit operations, preferably gained as a result of direct working experience in a relevant operation.
- At least three years experience in automated mineralogy techniques (MLA or QEMScan).
- Excellent analytical and structured problem solving skills for statistical data analysis: familiar with a variety of root-cause analysis techniques and Structured problem solving skills (e.g., six sigma, KT Problem analysis, potential problem & opportunity analysis, 5 Why's, Fishbone).
- Demonstrated knowledge of metallurgical accounting systems, process modeling applications (MLA, QuemScan).
- Demonstrated experience with developing and using standard metallurgical laboratory procedures to predict plant performance.
- Sound knowledge of principles & methods used in complex metallurgical & processing analysis. e.g., crushing, grinding, flotation, etc.
- Sound knowledge & understanding of process control philosophies, strategies & expert control systems.
- Strong understanding of the balance between the various groups i.e. technical, operations, asset management on to plant performance and the role of the plant across the value chain.
- Strong analytical and diagnostic skill set, an understanding of process control concepts, an understanding of a broad range of equipment types, understanding of mass balances and flow sheets, understanding of budgetary and cost/benefit analysis, and strong organizational skills.
- Microsoft Office, AutoCad, Vulcan or similar mining software knowledge.
