Job description:

Overview:

The Chief Geologist will head one of the two Base Metal exploration sections, made up of a number of subordinate geological professionals, reporting to the Director, PBM Exploration.  The key role contribution is to manage and co-ordinate exploration activities based on the largest AEM follow-up programme ever undertaken worldwide by a single entity, consisting of over 120,000 like kilometres of AEM data,  There is a significant responsibility attached to the need to manage geophysical and diamond drilling contractors,  budgets, on-going QA/QC, training and mentoring of staff. Prioritization, re-prioritization and constant iteration of targets and results is an important component of this multi-year programme, as anomalies are expected to total over 1,000 in very favourable VMS stratigraphy that has never been flown before.

 

In addition he will be responsible for implementing development diamond drill programmes to investigate known base metal deposits and those which may be discovered as a result of the AEM programme. Constantly liaise with New Business Development to ensure all work has an economic focus by concentrating only on those deposits or alteration systems which display associations of attributes of size, grade, mineralogy, favourable infrastructure, and/or other economic parameters to ensure the most dedicated work is performed on the best prospects at any point in time.

Responsibilities:

Strategy & Planning

Provide input to assist management in the development of strategic and medium term operational plans for the exploitation or abandonment of concession holdings.

 

Manage the process of developing specifications, assessing bids and formulating strategies for contractor services required to support all planned exploration activities.

 

Set discipline-specific procedures in order to establish effective work flows and continually look for opportunities for worthwhile, cost effective and sustainable enhancements.  

 

Plan and Manage Exploration

Plan and manage the operations and activities in order to achieve effective resource deployment and to ensure agreed standards of technical excellence are met.

 

Consolidate Senior Geologist inputs for the development of annual plans, objectives and budgets and secure approval, ensuring provision has been made for all planned activities.

 

Supervises the activities of assigned personnel.  Performs supervisory functions at the level established by Management for the position.

 

Develop drill programmes to investigate known base metal deposits and those which may be discovered as a result of the AEM programme.  Constantly liaise with New Business Development to ensure all work has an economic focus.

 

Cost Control

Monitor performance against agreed levels to ensure effective cost control and delivery in line with milestones.  Strong focus on QC/QC; all data must be auditable and defendable.

 

Field Appraisals

Triages anomalies for further investigation, which may involve screening using ground gravity, prospecting, and detail geochemical and geological surveys.

 

Interprets diamond drilling data/information and develop new targets using iterative methods.  Also ensures that drilling sites have been surveyed, are available and layouts have been circulated to those concerned.

 

Carries out field appraisal and data interpretation to rank and recommend target areas via periodic reports.

 

Liaison and Contact

Liaises closely with the geophysical and geochemical staff in Exploration Technical Services.

 

Has frequent to regular contacts with immediate associates and others in mining operations at all levels, to coordinate work and resolve problems as they arise.

 

Technical Advice & Reports

Provide the high-level discipline-specific technical advice, guidance and innovative problem resolution capability in order to address acquisition/processing issues and support and/or complement colleagues’ contributions.

 

Manages the preparation of reports on field activities and carries out preliminary economic analysis and submits to supervisor.

 

Oversees the compilation of the six-monthly report on exploration activities for submission to DMMR (Deputy Ministry for Mineral Resources).

 

Maintain awareness of regional and international technical and scientific advances so that Ma’aden can capitalize on benefits.

 

Field Site Visits

Makes frequent visits to field sites to ensure proper implementation of technical standards and field procedures.

 

 Monitors on a continuing basis all exploration and drill programmes to ensure all are fully auditable to JORC standards

 

 

Annual Plans

Provides key input data for the annual departmental program and budget submissions.

 

Observation presentations

Develops and presents exploration observations, geological interpretations and conclusions to Management and at technical seminars in the Kingdom.

 

Acting

Deputizes for the Director, PBM Exploration during periods of absence.

 

Supervision

Performs supervisory functions and exercises financial authorities at the level established by Management for the position.

 

Monitors and aliases with drilling contractors to ensure that targets are achieved.

Performs similar or other related activities such as training subordinates, providing work directions to drilling contractors. Participating in budget preparation, ensuring adherence to safety regulations, keeping abreast of developments in exploration technology and geology of mining, etc

 

Determines work method from existing alternative methods in accordance with professional standards and established policy.  Completed work assignments are subject to review.

Supervisory Responsibility:

        Supervises:       3 Senior Geologists

                                  4 Geologists

                                  Other subordinates as may be hired

 

Field Activities

Controls and coordinates field activities, i.e. drilling and sampling, oversees logging, marking and photography of core samples, ensuring QA/QC standards are met.  Interprets assay results and design follow up programs. Oversees preliminary resource evaluation including estimates of resource potential based on drill-hole interpretation. Reviews previous work carried out in field, interprets data and focuses activities on areas of potential.

 

Talent Development

Motivate, develop, train and appraise staff in order that they maximize their contribution and fulfilled their personal development needs.

 

Review appraisals carried out by subordinate Team Leaders in order to establish consistency and fairness across the discipline.

 

Focus on mentoring younger/recent employees.

 

HSE

Champion strict compliance with all approved HSE procedures and practices in order to afford protection to life, property and the environment.

 

Conducts regular HSE meetings within own area.  Oversees the monitoring and auditing activities, providing guidance and instructions to subordinates and authorizes measures to alleviate unsafe work practices. 

 

Investigates and provides recommendations or responses to incidents in the assigned work area. 

Enforce that contractors working on cite adhere to the Company's HSE regulations.

 

Qualifications:

Education: 

B.Sc. in one of the geo sciences from an internationally recognised institution.

 

Experience:

A minimum of 18 - 20 years stretching discipline-specific experience, with a minimum of 8 years proven managerial track record. 

 

Experience in Gold or Base Metal exploration at a senior level.

 

Experience with large scale geophysical programmes helpful.  

 

Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.

 

Knowledge:

Expert knowledge of Mining Software (MAPINFO, DHLogger) and/or other related Applications. 

 

  • Good knowledge of English.
  • Computer literacy in geological modeling, exploration and geological software.
  • Experience in drill programmes and compilation of drill results
  • Exposure to modern practices in the areas of safety, sustainability and community relations.
  • Advantageous to have relevant experience on more than three commodities and different geological terrains
