Barrick is headquartered in Toronto, Canada and has 27 mining operations with many advanced exploration projects located across 5 continents and a large number of tenements located on some of the most prolific and prospective mineral trends.  11 of Barrick’s mining operations are found within the Australia Pacific region, with its regional head office located in Perth, Western Australia. Barrick (Granny Smith) Pty Ltd is located 950kms north east of Perth and 23kms south of Laverton and has been one of Australia’s leading gold producers for the last 15 years.  With continued growth in our underground mining operations and an exciting exploration portfolio, the projected mine life is 8 years based on the current reserves.  This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced safety and training professional to join the Granny Smith Open Pit Project as the Senior Safety and Training Advisor. Initially part of the Operational Readiness group within the Granny Smith Open Pit Feasibility Study Team, this newly created role will be required to assist in the development of the relevant safety and training procedures associated with the Open Pit operations. Reporting to the Open Pit Mine Manager, your key role upon Project Approval will be to lead the open pit mine safety and training function to ensure members of the Open Pit Mining team have the required safety awareness, skills, training and competency to enable the Mining Department to safely meet the required production levels. You will direct a small team of safety and training professionals providing safety advice and training to the production, maintenance and technical services departments of the Open Pit operation. The feasibility study is well advanced. The schedule is tight but realistic with pre-mining planned for mid 2013. Experience and qualifications required: This role will suit a proactive, systems orientated safety and training professional looking to take on the challenge of developing the departmental safety and training standards and procedures from the ground up. Your ability to safely lead, motivate and influence others whilst building and maintaining effective relationships across the operation will ensure your success in this position Skills and Experience  To be successful in the role you will have:

  • Recognised tertiary qualifications in Training and Development or a related discipline
  • Certificate IV Assessment and Workplace Training
  • High level of understanding of open pit metalliferous mining including, drill and blast and large mobile mining equipment operation
  • Experience in competency based training and assessment
  • Competent in development of customised training and assessment resources from site, industry and Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) requirements
  • Detailed working knowledge of the Mines Safety and Inspection Act & Regulations and other relevant legislation affecting the employment and safety of persons in the mining industry in WA.
  • Demonstrated success as an effective leader in a customer focused environment
  • Experience in the development of processes and procedures to industry best practice
  • Change management process knowledge Demonstrated success in the implementation of process improvement and the application of continuous improvement ideas
